save it to another project folder, delete it and go back if you
need it.
that way you dont get stuck, but always can go back if you
went the wrong way.

this has happened to me too recently, thought a melody was cool, but as the song progressed realized it was cheesy.
so i tried to made the melody as cool as i could with the midi and midi effects, and it was still cheese, but then i bounced it to audio and made it all glitchy and buzzy and whatever by cutting it up, reversing, duplicating, etc. sounded nothing like the original melody. actually sounded pretty cool.
maybe this approach can help you too. good luck.

Why delete? You invested some good time and sweat into it.
Put it into separate pattern,or move the midi clip aside from your working area.See if you can rework it again somewhere in the track.Perhaps not in original way,but if you bounce it and cut it,put several bites into sampler and rework it into the track it still not a complete time waste.

I say what jekvan says, try to find a place for the melody...cut it, fx it, and if this does not make you happy then I say delete it and move on

This is not a question and i dont have to imagine anything this is my reality (From my chosen , This is not forced on me) In few days ill buy me a new computer (And this is somthing i always do - Years) So i leave this hard disk behind and start from new , I like it . So dont have to cry on this mello or that atmos or this Hh loops , When you know what you want to creat the best way is to come into clean and with an new page , When you have the knowledge you should not be afraid from anything and sure not of deleting this file or that , This is not matter .
When you delete 1 sound 100 new come later and in 99% they will be much better .
Happy weekend .. !

Sometimes i make a melody and it sounds great at that moment. I go to sleep with feeling good about it and next day i realise its sounding too cheesy. but the melody itself is nice so i just mute it and move on.
