I haven't listened to much music lately. Just haven't got around to it. And all of a sudden, I notice an old CD, that I haven't played in years now. Hallucinogen - Twisted. I overlistened to that album more than once, because it's great, and hell, I'm loving it for over a decade now. Deciding to start with Snarling Black Mabel, I sat down and listened to it... And then I noticed something odd. Sure, the sound is dated, but something else. The entire track is minimalist.

That's right. You heard me. Minimalist. It's just made out of very few things: bassdrum, bassline (one), hihats (one sequence), melodies. That's it. I listened to it again, to make sure. Deja Vu. The first time listening to this track: Vuja De - An experience like nothing you have ever seen or felt before.

Psytrance that I've heard a million times, it just caught me completely off guard. Has anyone ever had something like this happen?

true.
it was the power of the music that hit you: the same melody with 2-3 synth sounds on top of each other being tweaked. some of the tracks still do the trick and some don't...           "no one ever sweats on a plug-in" -moby

For me less is more. You don't need a lot of things distracting you from what you really want. My favourite trance tunes are simple ones with big acid lines n not past the 140BPM mark...also one of the reason I find a lot of (old n new) techno extremely psychedelic. There's space for sounds to breath, you have a different perception or rooms when you can focus more on the reverb patches and there is not a wall of noise masking modulations on synth patches.

recently i went to my parents' and grabbed an old box with hundreds of burned cd's that i, when i stopped downloading music illegally, threw out of my room into the cellar. in the past years, i bought a lot of those cd's, but never really listened to them for i thought i knew them by heart. back at home, i flipped through them, and i somewhat re-discovered tons of great, naw, awesome music! haldolium's first two albums, auricular's first, noma - navigator, and so on...music that sounds so 2001 that i could burst out in tears.

actually i have always been aware that this material existed, and that it was top notch in my book, but it was just then that it became evident to me. before, it was plain knowledge, without comprehension. it's like, i know what pi is, what it is good for and that it certainly rocks, but i have no idea what it really means, how it was calculated etc.

it's an awesome feeling, really.

Yahel - For The People is another gem i feel similar. It's not minimalistic but the arrangments in very simple yet psychedelic.

Simple can be psychedelic           We were born naked & grow up to become wicked.
