| The word "psyche" overlaps both with the concept of "mind" and "soul", so it means both mind-manifesting and soul-manifesting. |

Hm, that makes me wonder if I've ever even heard psychedelic music before! Or maybe I just interpret it not as 'mind-expanding', but 'smile-expanding'.
Let me put it like this: For me, as a surfer, listening to a music that I find 'psychedelic' is like sliding into a wave that breaks perfectly and I follow it's form as it folds, spontaneously and instinctively moving in perfect harmony with it's shape and energy. (When I find myself dancing like I'm surfing, that's the music I find psychedelic.) When I'm riding it, it's not mind-bending and tripping me out, because I'm right there on top of it, with it.
I guess I've never heard any music that's made me trip out and get me out of my head. It's either pleasing, or it's not.
So yeah, mind-manifesting and soul manifesting...
@Spaced-out Rastaman, you're right, the criteria lies with the individual.

Nice to read a surfer's perspective... funny that you mention it... back when the darkpsy thing was really getting into full swing, I remember feeling like surfing on top of the music, while some of the more fluffy psyheads were cowering in a corner, hearing dark for the first time.
So I can relate, but having surfed only once (did catch a wave on my first try, pure beginner's luck ofc.) I would never be able to feel, see, hear it like that.

Yes, I thought about that too when I had posted. And I like that overlapping. But when I read about the coining of the term it seemed they had more just the notion of "mind" in mind.. Because they were psychologists.... again a word and field that often forgets the notion of soul actually implied in it.. Maybe because soul is such a problematic term in the field of sciences?

Hm, I don't feel like a psychedelic track bends my mind or trips me out in any way.
A psychedelic track to me fits in exactly with what I want to hear and where I want to be taken. When I hear a good psychedelic track it feels like I am composing the sounds in the moment. exactly as I want them to be.
And of course, it makes me feel really really good.
(that's why when I find an artist that can do this consistently, I feel like he's my brother and we've been playing music together all our lives.)
As for what elements make a psychedelic track. That can be anything. Even just a well placed hi hat. Of course it's subjective, so the question posed by the originator of this thread aren't really valid. One man's psychedelic is another man's noise, or cheese, etc. And visa versa.
I know what works for me.
'Regular' music is music that doesn't work for me. And there's too many variables to put it into words.

+1, agreed with you completely. Especially with the part about "Even a well placed hi-hat can be psychedelic" (KDD and Mubali have very well place hi-hats)
The only time I get "tripped-out" (even at home, or at a party when not tripping) is when there is a certain sound that reminds me of a noise I would hear from the forest nearby, or makes me think that my cell phone is ringing in the middle of a festival when I haven't had service in days (nor would I answer it anyway). Or a very well placed sound that reverberates from left to right around a circle of speakers surrounding you can be pretty cool and mind bending. Sometimes there is a sound where I'm dancing at a party and I will think that everyone around me has just started talking or whispering but when I look around it seems everyone just in the groove.
Now, the funniest sample was played at World Bridge II in North Carolina, USA where two djs mixed a Dave Chappelle 2 minute stand-up comedy sample where he was talking about fucking monkeys. The whole dancefloor was laughing so hard we were in tears. (It could've been somarobotics, but not sure) |

@Danrennt98 I know what you're talking about!
(I just caught Dave Chapelle a couple weeks ago at a small unadvertised show. Mostly ad libbing and funny as hell). |

The way i see this is a state of human mind. To some Pop may be psychedelic but he/she may not define it in the category of psychedelia for example... it is a state of mind.
To me the music that puts me in a state of mindlessness and makes me feel the essence of timelessness, is psychedelic. For example: chanting, tribal drums and singing, rhythmic drumming or beats without many breaks etc... all enhancing my experience of closing my eyes and aiding meditation or a state of being mindless / timeless.
the more breaks and lifts / drops a track has, for me this is pretty much a sign of getting time into the equation and makes it very predictable. anyways thats just me and my thoughts
Yours could be totally different!!!

why put it as an equation? a=b and so on? Music and life are open, free flowing, expressions of the human mind. Based on our psyche and subconscious learning and absorbing, started putting emotions and feelings through different music in a box and called them names / genres and the like only to differentiate certain sounds and emotions through them from others all this to make it simple for the very weak mind we all have.
i am staying away from the who? and why? these are facets of the human false EGO and I stay as far away as possible from this bro. Sorry! i cant and dont recall who and why
The essence of what i said is in the depth of what i said. The Psychedelia or psychedelic feeling is in the mind. The same feeling a person listening to psytrance with closed eyes, smile or high energy banging feet or swaying motion etc etc..... can be seen in many listening to pop
Psychedelia is the way of life and certain emotions felt which people like you and me put in a box and named it psychedelic. What people define psychedelia to be is nothing but certain emotions felt while tripping or listening to music. Not necessarily psytrance.
I personally love Jim Morrison, Deep Purple, Led Zepplin, Scorpions, Beetles and many other rock / slow rock bands.... I have the same feeling when i close my eyes and listen to them as i do while listening to some psytrance of today with quality viz. Enichkin / Some old psykovsky and the like.....
To me a walk in nature without actual music through instruments or a kick n bass is highly psychedelic experience Walking outdoors in secluded places with heavy rain, strong winds with partly cloudy skies and the moon peeking out is highly psychedelic. All this without music but the actual music made in nature itself.....How? and Why?
Only i know my feelings
PLUR all the way
