1. What are the characteristics of a psychedelic track?
What are the critiria that lead you to characterize a music track as 'psychedelic'?

2. What do you think that is the difference between psy music and 'regular' music regarding the effect on the listener?

I feel that psychedelic music trips you out just like the rest kinds of music but usually there is a tendency for 'inward thinking' and that the atmosphere that they create resembles that of the experiences with psychedelic drugs.           http://www.facebook.com/pages/Acid-Waves/210623772399578?fref=ts

OBE!           I understand change is the only constant but I'd rather stick to variables.

Its a magic act, it has surprise factor... changes direction, teases you, makes you face all universes and then go back to yourself.

It makes your mind bend and appreciate the illusion of reality. Makes your spine chill and crack. Will create an atmosphere of sound and rhythm just to twist it all around you for amusement of all involved parts.

I have always just found that good music, where you can feel the artist has put his soul into it for the sake of the music and not some image or anything, has been very psychedelic... And it often takes me very far on trips.. I mean anything from Grateful Dead to Psykovsky to folk/traditionel of most cultures...           "... the fundamental striving of every man should be to create for himself an inner freedom towards life and to prepare for himself a happy old age." - Gurdjieff

Hm, I don't feel like a psychedelic track bends my mind or trips me out in any way.
A psychedelic track to me fits in exactly with what I want to hear and where I want to be taken. When I hear a good psychedelic track it feels like I am composing the sounds in the moment. exactly as I want them to be.

And of course, it makes me feel really really good.

(that's why when I find an artist that can do this consistently, I feel like he's my brother and we've been playing music together all our lives.)

As for what elements make a psychedelic track. That can be anything. Even just a well placed hi hat. Of course it's subjective, so the question posed by the originator of this thread aren't really valid. One man's psychedelic is another man's noise, or cheese, etc. And visa versa.
I know what works for me.
'Regular' music is music that doesn't work for me. And there's too many variables to put it into words.

I'm going to play devil's advocate for a minute here.

I thought the term 'psychedelic' was coined to mean "mind-expanding. If a track does exactly what you want it to do, how can it be mind-expanding?

Agree on the hi-hat thing 100%, btw. Great example.           My FaceBook psychedelic techno page, with news, videos, DJ sets and free releases:

I'm going to use that quote, thanks. I cracked a giant smile just reading it.           My FaceBook psychedelic techno page, with news, videos, DJ sets and free releases:

EDIT: oops, double post.

EDIT2: since I can't delete my post, let me share this link with you: http://www.a-wave.com/system7/pages/archive/views/openmind.htm

British psy pioneers System 7, sounding off on what truly psychedelic music is, for them. Very well written. My own position is basically what they point out in their opinion piece, plus the "hi hat factor" (thanks rich!).

I also believe that DJs with the right mindset and skillz can turn almost any track into a psychedelic experience. I remember Para Halu closing off a very intense and dark liveset with a metal outro. Mind = blown.

(credit goes to Hector for sharing the link with me. Thanks man!)          My FaceBook psychedelic techno page, with news, videos, DJ sets and free releases:

Thanx for the insightful answers.

There is much that can be said on this topic and, my attempt to express my questions as simply as I can, make these questions sound a little bit awkward.

I started this topic because I read quite frequently stuff like that most of today's psy-trance is not psychedelic at all.

It eventually seems like the critiria lie in one's own self.           http://www.facebook.com/pages/Acid-Waves/210623772399578?fref=ts
