I'm stuck folks. Any ideas on how i can make my sub bass more defined and present without making it muddy or louder?
The Formant Aoh sound is the bass, but i have another synth [404] for the sub bass. I had planned on using ethnic percussion sounds completely, instead of an electronic kick, but i am unsure i will be able to [lost all my ethnic percs]
I looked around the bassline thread..but its way too much to sift through :/
Ive been workin on the bass for days, lol
I'm using FLStudio 7 XXL, with Z3ta, Synth1, and Crystal Softsynth...[and the stuff with fruity of course] |

Where is the kick? I can barely hear it.
Is there reverb on it? Low freqs + reverb = mud.

I had a listen, and it strikes me that the formant sound is not the bass, its merely playing the same notes as the bass.
So, lets have a look at why you are having trouble getting presence out of the sub.
Well, the answer is in the problem - subs only contain only contain very low frequencies, and therefore have very little attack bite. You need more upper freqs in your bass, and you'll find it sounds bassier, because the uppers give the ear something to focus on, and 'pull' the sub through.
Think of this, if you are only working with 1 harmonic freq (ie a pure sine sub), the only thing you can do is change the volume - any other change is introducing harmonics - which is what you need to do. So you need to think about what harmonics your bass is missing and go from there. I would suggest looking at you filter settings and waveform selection. A saw wave for example can have just as much sub energy as a sine wave.
Hope this helps.
And yes - please turn up the kick - LOTS

About the kick, i am not sure if i'm even going to have a bass electronic kick [not to fond of them tbh]]
Well, the formant sound i have decided to make it more of a background type thing, and not so much as the bass [ive found a better bass]...
Another issue was that the formant sound wasn't spread enough to be heard cleary while it was a bass.
I messed with the EQ a bit and i will post the result in a second.
The Idea was to have two synths making the bass. but of course things change all the time, so now its sorta like, the bass, + a low end sound [formant]..lol |

[i reposted a 320kbit mp3]: http://www.tindeck.com/audio/my/orbm/goaindia2_7
This is a little more to how i want it, it seems more integrated into eachother..also the kick is just a filler...nothing final..i haven't even turned a single knob in reguards to kick..so please don't maim me...
The reason i made two synths the bass, because i liked the reverby formant sounds..but obviously reverby + delay-y[?] do not go well with low freqs.
And i wanted a more presence in my sub, but also in the high end. I couldn't see any other way than splitting.
Reguardless..i think the result in the clip i just posted is superb, for me it is anyways.
go to http://www.myspace.com/cronodevir and play goa india.....that is the original 'bass' to this song i made long ago..i am remaking it now. [it was on cosmic flower records compilation incase you might have heard it before]..yeah, it was kinda...low key
I plan on keeping relatively the same percussion format aswell..which is why i'm not worrying about the kick as of yet. This isn't really intended to be a dance track.
[also, btw, i didn't mean to double post, but the edit button was gone when i tried to come back, and so i made a new post, only then did the edit button return.. o.O] |

agreed reverb+delay do not go well with low freqs, but, contrary to popular opinion, they do go extremely well with the upper freqs of a bass synth. With considerable care taken in the application!
By delay, I'm not talking temposynced shennanigans, I'm talking very short lengths indeed. Same is true with the verb - very very short - and stereo too!
I will have a listen to the new version when I have a bit more time.

In FL, use a send channel.
Stick a highpass set to at least well above the sub to maintain mono integrity, followed by some reverb or a delay on the send channel, original bass gets through, and the effected version out of the send channel.
You don't need much to get the desired effect so watch the volume of the send channel!
Happy experimenting

i second that delay and reverb are not good for low freq sounds but a delay on the kick as efx is killer...
like right before all drums pause a kick hits with a delay
ringing and them boom bring all back, its a cool transition used
here and there in some songs... but then agian as far as reverb and delay goes if it sounds good do it fuk it theres no rules in music especially psykadelik |

Yes Goa...i don't like most of the stuff in recent years tbh. All this minimal sounding clicky poppy stuff that is psy...i want to here something big and driving like Teleport or Mahadeva...maby its just me, but i don't hear that anymore.
More goa with organic phat rawness would be nice imho. |

okay here is a screenshot of the mixer FL6 - I don't really use it these days.
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/Charasmatix/send.png
What is going on.
First of all, I choose a nice fresh clean channel for the bass with nothing else going through it.
I then select this channel by clicking on it.
The dials in the send channels (box in red at the bottom) are then uniquely tied in to the insert channel that is selected.
They tell me how much of the signal I putting to each respective send channel.
So here, I've put the bass into insert channel 2, and set the output to send channel 1 from insert channel 2 at full volume.
Then I click on send channel 1 to select it, apply the processing I want as normal, and use the send channel volume to mix it with the original bass.
Here's a demo I cobbled together of the effect I'm talking about - which I use throughout the track, not as a FX on the bass - this is part of my bass sound.
First without stereo magic - then with.
No eq or compression or anything, literally thrown together in 30 seconds - needs further work in other words - purely to illustrate what I mean.

maybe this isn't the bass sound you are after, but the principles are the same whatever sound you do want. .
