DECKS or LAPTOP???

I want to start playing out soon, and am debating wether to get some CDJ's or a laptop. I only have about £250 to spend, and have found a nice iBook for that price, but could probably only get a pair of terrible CDJ's for that price. So im tempted to get the laptop then i could play my own tunes in Ableton out live, plus use it for other stuff. Im just worried about people thinking im 'cheating' if i do this, because i have never played out on CDJ's before, yet surely if its tunes i have produced that im playing out that wont matter? Please can i have your thoughts, what shall i go for? |

go with the cdj and upgrade to dvs when you feel you can handle your cdj´s

Laptop
Laptop is way more useful than CD players, especially in non music related areas of your life.
You can´t make your own music on CD players.
About cheating... they said that when people started playing CDs instead of vinyl. Now everyone plays CDs, and many people who play CDs call laptop action "cheating". So that will always happen, and not worth paying attention to, in my opinion.

You're right Axis, i could do with a laptop for other things too, and will probably go for one. But also i really want to start on cdj's to earn the respect as a DJ...I wish there were some decent Decks out there for £100! then i could get both,lol. But seriously, i think if you DJ on laptop from the start, but you are playing your own tunes that are quite good, surely no one can say anything, because im guessing that producing takes alot more skill, knowledge, and timing judgement than mixing with cd decks does. |

Laptop also gets my vote..
i mean check ableton and the Akai controller(Apc 40) for it...
it looks sweet

Another vote for laptop...you can just get some DJ software...don't hit the sync button and you can practice djing like you would on CD's. Use the pitch bend buttons in the software and then move the pitch control. It will be the same as CD decks. You can also assign keyboard keys to do these things.
LAPTOP CAN DO SOOOOOO MUCH MORE!

Wuhaaaaa never ending story lap vs cdj... This is how I see it:
Laptop +1. Why?
CDJs have like how much 3 effects on it wah, flanger, cut... Laptop endless effects.
You need much less time to finde beat to beat on laptop so you have more time to do some grat fx on brake , or insert some crazy loop that you create you get my point.
I think thet laptop helps you a lot to have bether mix, more cool breaks.

And that is point where laptop takes advenage on cdj and not to talk about playing pure 24 bit wav in mix. Its simpl tehnology going rapidly with new great stuff thet we need to explore and use as bring new thing in our partys, mix production etc...
Just one exampl for end. One of the greatest techno/detroit/minimal producers/dj Plasticman aka Richie Hawtin has moved from vinyls to cdjs and then from cdjs to tracktor 3 and laptop....
