Hey, I'm completely fed-up with my digital audio workstation. I can't use any DAW (FL, reason, or live) without the songs playing back incredibly slow and crackly if i have more than say..3 VSTi's. I currently use Acoustica Mixcraft 4 as my DAW, yes I'm a noob but it handles the best. I know I'll probably have to get a desktop but I'm wondering what computer specifications are best for producing.

Currently 6GB RAM and for processor Intel Celeron CPU 900 @ 2.20GHz
64-bit operating system

Are you looking for a desktop or a laptop?

If you're looking for a laptop, i'd say it's better to go the extra mile (money wise) and get a top machine. My money goes all for Dell Precision. It's a true work horse of a laptop. Great performance, durability though not very portable. It's a big boy. The components are up to you and Dell gives you loads of options. You can go up to 32GB of RAM, 512SSD of disk and ultra fast i7QM processors.

Regarding desktops something like this would do the trick

Case - Antec Sonata III 500
MotherBoard - Asus or Gygabyte (i think it's good to put some money in here...you can get really good ones at around 160 euros)
Processor - i5-4570 3.20GHz (it's quad core fast as hell and cheaper than a i7)
Memory - start with 8GB 1600 DDR3....usually it's more than enough
Cooler - NOCTUA - NH-U12P SE2 (i find it very important to have a decent cooler....it will add years to your computer's life)
Graphic Card - you dont need a powerful card for music production. I always buy a basic card so there's less probabilities of hardware/software issues)

A desktop like this will cost you around 650 euros and it's a great machine for music making!

Forgot to mention is it worth getting an external soundcard and if so what models do you suggest that are mid price range?           http://www.youtube.com/djrea4815

If you have a desktop you can probably get an internal one which I know nothing about but external wise I'd suggest going with MOTU or PreSonus.

Avoid M-Audio. I had one for a few years around 2006 &was never fully impressed. I still have it but will be selling it on eBay as soon as I can afford my RME Babyface           Cuntus Maximus.

I prefer an external soundcard for all the obvious reasons....ex:you can use it in the studio and when playing.

RME and Motu are very good choices. You can check also Roland (http://www.thomann.de/pt/roland_ua55_quadcapture.htm) or if you have firewire Echo (http://www.thomann.de/pt/echo_audiofire_4.htm)

Any core i5 or i7 based PC with 8 or even 4 gb RAM will do the job i think Computers are damn powerful these days.

With pro or semi-pro soundcard of course...           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

It all depends of course, Cosma for examples used his basic PC speakers as monitors & had a lovely sound whereas I've heard tunes made using $1000K+ monitors that sound like absolute crap.

You need to work with what you can afford. That'sost important. Good computer & software and a midi keyboard is all I've got for now and I'm just enjoying learning my software before spending another cent on gear.

Well except for modules lol.           Cuntus Maximus.

If you have some experience in hardware i suggest you build your own desktop.
You save loads of money that way.
I gnna build a new pc this autumn, will be like 500$ for real good specifications(then i have the chassi).

For laptop, get a i7 and your set.
With laptop tho, even tho you have a real powerful one you always have to be abit careful with not using too much heavy plugins.
So i recommend a desktop.

Yup. I would also add that a Solid State Drive as your main drive is a massive, massive performance/stability boost for an audio workstation. The jump from my laptop to my newest desktop was paltry in terms of its processing power/RAM but the addition of an SSD was...ridiculous.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe
