Debating switching to Ableton (for a while at least) partly to encourage myself to learn more about its live abilities, and partly to facilitate different workflow/creativity.
Not to turn into a Live vs Logic (what I use now) thread, because I love Logic and there are parts of it I think I'll always come back to.
BUT
My only main concern - I use logic's sampler, the EXS24, for a lot. It's what I use for bass, it's what I use for drums, and it's what I use for a lot of techy/dirty sounds. Filter sounds good and it's a very functional sampler.
So what's a good option for Live? Their on board sampler just doesn't seem to be all that appealing. Should I look at Kontakt? Others?

Go man do it !!!
i have changed 2 years ago from cubase to ableton - best idea !!
i really loved cubase... but if youre willing to like ableton you will have a much faster flow - live and in the studio. |

have you looked at both the simpler and the sampler?
They are surprisingly effective and deep even if they don't look so from their gui initially

GUI just means so much for workflow.
I am giving them a try as we speak. Some fun stuff I can do with 'em - doesn't SOUND nearly as good as that fat EXS filter though.
Will experiment more...

No disagreements there (RE workflow)
there are different filter types available as you've obviously discovered but yeah they're ableton filters so they're decent but not amazing.
the ableton devices often don't become apparent in their usefulness and fullness until you combine them with racks
but you can rack up VSTs too so....

Honestly racks are a major part of what makes the switch appealing - definitely not something for which there is a reasonable equivalent in Logic.
I just have this nagging feeling that for "linear power" in midi editing/etc Logic takes the cake; since I work largely in midi, this is super important. And the VSTs!!! If I were to switch to Ableton, I would need to get (probably buy)
1) quality software compressor (sonalksis isn't cutting it for me these days... UAD stuff? expensive. What else is there?)
2) quality sampler (probably Kontakt though I'm not a huge NI fanboy...)
3) quality software EQ/analysers/etc (Fab maybe? UAD again? More money)
...And even the other stuff - Logic's phasers/flangers/bitcrusher are all staples in my tunes. So much to replace!
But - that bloody Live workflow... is just amazing and inspiring. Sigh.
I can't win, but I can't really lose either.

I switched to Ableton 2 years ago, and never looked back.
I agree with you on having to spend some extra money on some third-party plugins, the soundtoys bundle & Alchemy were the first things I bought after switching.
I'd say...pick up the demo and start experimenting |

UAD is a good investment.
But I think the plugins ableton very good for certain utilities.
1) ableton 9 -> has the glue compressor and compressor. I think they excelent.
2) Ableton has the sampler, it is incredible. I think he's extremely powerful and easy to play.
3) EQ ableton is also quite useful, especially in surgical eq. Now it comes with built-in spectrum.
At the end, go learn ableton, the minimum that you will gain from this is more knowledge. |

I too am in favor of the ableton compressor and the glue compressor. however, I am admittedly not very picky about compressors...lives was the first one I ever used...and whenever I try something else I can't seem to get the results I want out of it, or not nearly as quickly.
I totally can't use the ableton flanger/phaser though. Uhbik's flanger/phaser are out of this world awesome and very easy to use.
EQ8 in live9 is much better but I still use Pro Q over it. workflow is nicer, responds to mouse wheel, great curves, and the 'hear what you cut/solo' mode, while also in EQ8, isn't as nice to use because of the button placement to toggle the solo mode on or off.

Live has a fairly good work flow. I would encourage the switch if your looking for new ways to innovate and want to learn its capabilities. I've been an FL user for 9 years now and I just find the work flow of other DAW (cubase, ableton, reaper--altho i love its customize options) quite clunky. Things seem to take much longer than necessary. Part of this is due to my affinity with FL but part of it is because things actually are more time consuming than they need to be. When I first heard of ableton I thought it was going to be so much faster once I learned it. It wasn't. That said every day has its strong and weak points. The reasons I wanted away from FL in the past are disappearing with every improved release. 11 beta is out now.
