The current "best seller" on Ektoplazm is ManMadeMan's album Free To Listen with a combined total of 6,288 downloads at the time of this writing. The band had total creative control and enjoy all the promotional benefits of having their music immediately available for download at no cost, exactly as they wished to present it, and their album will never go out of stock.
Selling is not the only means of getting your music out there. This is not to say that every artist should follow in ManMadeMan's footsteps, but you know... it would probably help matters of market saturation and creative freedom if a few more artists were to explore the immense promotional potential of releasing some of their music for free. But of course, this may work for some and not for others...

i sold 10 copies hand to hand
now the problem is and this counts even for someone who's "in" the scene...
a lot of releases are not so good there's an overflow of releases as well... with my income i simply can't buy all that i want to hear even if i wish to so most people are glad to have those tracks in the DJ sets, that's how they spread... now as MP3's before it was on tapes
what i see is that basicly what you see as mp3 downloads is just the visible aspect of eschanging tapes in the past... believe me i had over 200 tapes with lots of them mixes... that's how fans of the genre had their music that's how labels and artists were supported as then the fans could buy it
but as mentioned a lot of the psytraznce folks are not people that got so much money... here in belgium almost 50% are students and they got basicly two choices: or they go to the gigs or they spend their money on the CD's
they can't do both and i think that's what is "forgotten" even i for the moment am still in that zone though i'm not a student, i got simply not enough income to go to gigs and buy CD's and buy my equipment... so i go to gigs to sponsor the artists buy a few cd's here and there to help the labels but you can't buy all that you like or i would be working a 9 to 5 job and have to quit composing music...
imho the psytrance scene is oversaturated which has it's advantages but also it's disadvantages
in the past you bought for 1.50€ a good chromium tape ans you ask on a gig to the dj if you could record his set and had a tape for a few weeks and passed it on or copied it
in time a good houseparty (even before we spoke of goatrance or psytrance was about 1-3 € entrance records were sold for 5-7€ and as student i received every month 70€ later even 100€ so back then i could easyly do every weekend a gig and buy records
but now if i were to go every week to a gig i spend 100€ even more perhaps that's where all the CD money is being spent on? as a decent CD is sold at 20€ so if i would do what i would be doing 12 years ago i would pay about 400€ a month while 12 years ago i had even an extra with the 100€ i had from my parents...
so how does it come that to do the same support for a similar scene the price got quadrupled?
perhaps that's where the reason of declining sales may be found as students usually still got around the same amount of pocket money...
and this is for belgium i don't know how it did evolve in other countries...
but i am sure this is one of the reasons as well
no situation is stronger then a heart that dares to love
so may the force of life light and love be with you |

well i guess we (klopfgeister) sold a couple of albums , but we see it more as a promotion to get some nice, well payed bookings..
albums sales gives you a nice pocket money every month, but its still unrealistic (for us) to count only on the sales in the psytrance/progressive scene..
besides that i do music for websites, tv and commercials and DJ ing on commercial "non trance" events here in germany which helps me to afford my trance passion.
but we are happy that we found a label (IONO Music), which pays honestly and correctly and offers artists a real fair deal.
so we are very happy with the situation and so we go on releasing on small labels.........till madonna calls to produce her new cd, hahaha..

If Basic was selling 2000 copies then the big names would sell 5000-6000 copies on average.
At the moment big artists sell around 2500-3000 copies maximum. Its their words not mine.

ummm... 10 years back I think artists were just hippies with talent travelling the world with their case and playing for free or little money... spreading the seed of sound everywhere they went...
Nowadays artists get paid for every gig and compared to the past... you guys are really lucky to earn from the talent you possess...
Then why all the fuss bout Album sales? Dont you guys play atleast 4 gigs a month and make good money off it?
I think what mayhem you cause on the dancefloor while spinning a nasty set should encourage you enough to remove all doubt for the love we have for your music that unfortunately does not convert to album sales... and those figures should not discourage you as they mean nothing but the lack of $$$ in our now very expensive scene.

Man i dont know you gives you these numbers but they are not even close to reality.
Israeli people always exaggerated with their sales.
Even if Infected Mushroom though managed in the future to sell these numbers they would be the exception to the rule.
In any case dear Basic if you have sold 2000 copies and your numbers are still growing then you are already a psy trance star near the magnitude of Wizzy Noise,Electric Universe,Etnica and more.
Congratulations and good luck on selling 5000 copies on your next album....
P.S Get serious mate.

I dont produce or spin...
but in the 2 years that i gave my everything to the scene ... I can proudly say I have attended atleast 300 parties in bombay... and contributed to almost every known artist´s performance that ever touched foot in India... That used to be about 3 parties a week... now i work... cant afford to be such a madhatter... so in order to continue my contribution ... I purchase 20 cds a month...
Your Cd was on my recent order... I think its great work... very fresh... you´re sales should be still moving, and with a cd like that behind your back are you telling me you are having issues getting 4 gigs a month? ... and as i´m not mistaken its around a 1000 Euro´s a gig right?
Everytime i listen to that Dooooooodd warped sample... Im on the floor mannnn...
Wishes n Respect

Hey, how about a few more figures? I am particularly interested in how many copies artists are selling on Beatport and other download shops.
(And to follow up with the numbers I posted at the top of this page, ManMadeMan's album has now been downloaded 10,573 times. Ektoplazm ended up serving over 325,000 full releases last year alone.)
