Well we have to live from our performances now that you've stopped buying our CDs!
|
|
But hasn't it been like that for a long time? |

imo any artist that doesn't do a 'send me money, I'll send you the files' approach these days is kicking themself for no reason. Not to say that you shouldn't press CDs if you really want to (though, I don't see the purpose....) but I've contacted multiple artists/labels this year and asked for a direct download option...and they tried to convince me to buy the CD...
Lost sales for them :\ for no reason!

Most of the time this approach is met with something like, "If you don't want to give them to me I will just find somewhere else to download them."

Unfortunately, yes. I'm incredibly impatient and I see no need to wait for a week or longer for an object to be physically shipped to me so that I can put it into my computer, extract the data then never use or look at the CD ever again. So if the choices given are
1) paying for it and getting it right away
2) paying for it and getting it in a week or longer with the added bonus of an increased carbon footprint and more garbage in my place
3) not paying for it and getting it right away
I would prefer to go with 1, but 3 > 2. I don't think I'm the only one with these habits.

I think there is some good reason there. Or at least I can imagine one. If an artist sends you his files (whether for money or free), he cannibalizes the CD sales. The label loses money and will be less likely to release his music next time. So, anybody who is not a one-hit wonder would be interested in his label's profitability and try to steer you towards buying CDs.
The best solution would be to include instant file download as a bonus with every CD purchase. This way, you get your scenarios 1 AND 2. And, hopefully, you'll be sufficiently impressed with this cool scheme to forgo the 3rd scenario.
Somebody is already doing this, no?.. |

I would be down for that. As long as they can keep the CD and not waste the resources shipping it. I just plain don't like physical media.
There are very, very, very few labels that actually make money pressing CDs. Most lost money...at least in this scene. This is why it continually baffles me that people still do it..and then have the audacity to complain about losing money on CDs!
Also - just because you use a direct download option doesn't mean you have to sidestep the label in the case where the label is actually a significant factor (which they are less and less these days...)
Labels as they used to exist are not going to anymore - or at least will continue to be an extreme minority in this scene. It's just the way everything is going.
Some people are doing it this way, yes. Just not enough.
Am I in the minority here? Does everyone besides me have a love for CDs? Seems to me that if the scene is strapped for cash then it would be logical to have more of the money coming in for the music going directly to mitigating operating costs and label/artist compensation and not the production of some anachronistic physical media that hardly anyone uses anyways.
Of course, some people are all about the album art and stuff - I personally don't care tbh, but look at Ektoplazm...got all your artsy stuff covered
Just load that shit into the rasterbator and you have all the full-blown album art you could ever want in a size that's actually nice to look at. If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

A CD still makes a better gift. Especially if it has a good cover or something interesting in the booklet.
Also, as a promotional item at parties. I think it's way cooler than a napkin with an URL scribbled on it. |

Oh yeah, for spreading at parties and stuff CDs are far superior, and I agree with the gift as well. I always thought more artists should bring CDs out to venues with them to sell.
Perfectly legitimate uses for CDs there

I just hate downloading, then having to burn the cd, then write the tracks on the cd. I like the uniqueness of having a physical cd as well (cover art, etc).
If I was a laptop dj I'd probably never buy physical cds though.

I haven't bought a physical CD since early 2009. I went completely digital and have no regrets.
Still, I understand that some people (a dwindling number) like CDs... hence offering CD versions of most of the official releases from the Ektoplazm netlabel group. They're also good to have at gigs and such but certainly aren't a money maker... it's just that physical media is the best vehicle of delivery in the physical world just as (free) digital media is best in the digital world.

imo, many people around the world don't buy cd's because don't know how to get them... And even if some of them know website links, many don't wanna take risk or simply are lazy...

I think this is an important point. Some people are willing to pay, but (thanks to the Internet) very few people are willing to wait (for CD delivery). If you're not willing to offer easy, paid downloads (eg, Bandcamp), don't complain about lost revenues. |
