There always seem to be 1000 bad excuses for people not to buy music.
My free release on Ektoplazm had 17.335 downloads. Imagine just 5% had bothered to donate or buy the music.

i wonder when lot of the release were on vinyl if the sales were better? i doubt artists were bitching about sales even if it was the same..it s psytrance not pop rock .these days lot of guys make music with cracked stuff and expect to sell their music,if even artists don t show example what do you except , even if it don t change anyhting , it show how the situation is,listeners not paying for the music are not to blame imo ,they just take advantage of the net like everyone.

Did you miss the "if" in the sentence or did you mean 5% of the number of downloads actually bought the same release? That would be quite a big number if true.

Yes I missed the "if".
My point is that there's obviously a quite big audience since the download counts (unique downloads) are pretty high on Ektoplazm. Yet very few seem to be willing to donate or buy the music. My release is not the only one that got big download counts. And it's not even in the top 50.
So imagine "if" just 5% had bought the music. That would make a profound difference to all artists involved allowing them more freedom concentrating on their music.

I couldn't find a "donate"-button on any of your releases on Ektoplazm or on your website. If you (or other artists on Ektoplazm) would appreciate to receive some donations for the music you give away, I guess a simple "donate"-button on your release-page or website would be a logical first step DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

I can add Paypal donate buttons to any release on request. Still, much work needs to be done to convert downloads into donations and this is high on the list of priorities for the Ektoplazm redesign. In the meantime any artist is welcome to email me about it.

I had a donate button for almost 2 years on my Elysium website (now linking to Ektoplazm) and had a lot (and I mean a lot) of downloads even before i joined Ektoplazm. In those 2 years I got one donation Euro 5.
There are indeed donation buttons on Ektoplazm and also next to my releases so I guess you missed it
There would not be any point in asking for a paypal donation button at Ektoplazm now as I am pretty sure most the people who wanted to download all my old releases have already downloaded (approx. 65.000 unique downloads till date)
Happy New Year.

Apparently they use a service called "Flattr" to donate directly on releases. Guess that's why I couldn't find the donate-button on Kristian's releases when I was looking for a "Donate" or "Paypal"-button
My bad.

Flattr is an experimental micro-payment service I have been trying out since the start of December. You can all read about it here:
http://flattr.com/about
If it ever gained traction and began to generate significant income I could pass that money onto individual labels and artists. There hasn't been much so far (in fact, the cost of using the service has hardly been recouped) but even Paypal had to start somewhere, and now it is the standard means of sending and donating money online. Flattr is just extra cool because I can monitor what releases people are actually donating for, an ability I unfortunately lack with Paypal. Still, it won't surprise me at all if uptake is unimpressive and I eventually remove Flattr to try something else instead.
I don't mean to monopolize the discussion with this subject... but it is important to consider the various artistic objectives of producers in this scene. I roughly break it down into those who want to travel and play all over the place, studio musicians who wish to be directly compensated for recordings, and those who treat production like a hobby and don't care to make money as long as they are heard (and make no mistake: some very good artists are in this last group). Free music is an excellent choice for the first and last category of artists but problematic for the stay-at-home artist who wants to make money from recorded media, whether physical or digital. This is an obvious consequence of donations not even matching 0.1% of downloads but we have by no means explored all the options. What I need is the time to work on the site and completely redevelop it - time I don't yet have since I am a full-time university student so please be patient... I know a lot of things need to be improved!
