Lol, I love ppl who throw around the term "capitalists" without actually knowing its meaning. (P.s. Take a look at Das Capital).
Also I found that article on the whether artist should get paid for there work rather demeaning. Apart from the feeling that the person who wrote it was a little bitter about not being on the "in", or maybe by their own criteria their art just "sucked". It had the feel of somesort of 19th century economic philosophy.
I imagine a satyrist like Jonathon Swift (Gulliber's Traveller) describing some distopian culture, where all the workers have small jars attached to their armpits, and are paid by the amount of sweat collected in a day. |

i said it with a glimt in the eye, I my self have a big capital, and im pretty aware of my own hypocrisy! But the term capitalism is kind of vage..
sure i could dive deeper into the meaning of it and find out that its not all bad and that its human greed thats the problem..

i respect the polite asking of full_on, so this will be my last word on the topic, just 3 points to put an end.
1. i am not here to market anyone, and as i already stated earlier in the topic , this market is dying and there is nothing you can do about it http://forum.isratrance.com/dear-artist-how-many-copies-of-your-album-were-sold/page12/
2. i am here to tell you that your market share will dye too, unless you see the opportunities for working with conceptualized ideas, themes and visuals. and i am giving you a link to see how it is done. if you are interested to belong to the winners, then you are welcome for a visionary cooperation about your releases. check it out. i am here because i have fun in visionary cooperations with musicians and not because i wanna make money in this market of losers. and anyway, one or two artist out of 200 blue coloured user in isratrance might really have interest in it.
3. and i myself look for people with visions, so you are the last for me to cooperate with, axis. if these private arguments you gave us , are your reason not to work with someone and to heavily try to kill his public name, then you should look for other cooperations anyway. i am the last to be interested in your unfair competitions with private arguments in a public place. and of course you have nothing to do with the party, it will not happen exactly because of ppl like you striving to kill the ppl with visions in these scene.

Thanks for the link... pretty interesting figures there.
Basilisk, was wondering if you had created in statistics linking the booking of the artists hosted on Ektoplazm after their free releases. Do promoters take a digital package as seriously as they would a physical print?

I wish it were that simple but all I have to go on is anecdotal evidence and personal experience. Ekoplex has done very well for himself since the release of Journey Of The Turtle. Same goes with some of the other (mostly) Canadian acts on the label. We haven't seen the same kind of response in Europe unfortunately. Is it because promoters don't take free music or digital media seriously enough? No, I don't think that's it. I blame the lack of pervasive full-on bass lines But seriously, most of the acts I've released write music that is decidedly non-standard. That is, after all, part of the attraction of releasing music for free; we get to take creative risks whereas the commercial labels tend to abide by formula.
Sooner or later I expect promoters to wise up to the power of social media. Free music is the best kind of promotion there is--not only for the artist but for the party as well. Most party people don't recognize the names on a line-up, right? I mean, if the line-up doesn't feature Infected Mushroom, Shpongle, Vibrasphere, a handful of other top-shelf artists, or some crowd favourites that have already passed through many times, I rather doubt most of the people attending a party know who is playing and what their style is. Not a problem if a savvy promoter books an artist with a free release on the market; just share it in the promo and the audience is instantly more informed (and, we hope, much more interested). There are many synergies to be explored here.

Incidentally we sold about 200 copies of the Ekoplex album and recouped our expenses from mastering and artwork. It now has about 30,000 free downloads. Not too shabby, but we really benefited from selling local.
