Back to the original topic of conversation... For being out for 5 months, my new album Shenanigans has sold slightly over 250 copies according to the last report I got from the label. Definitely a major change to what was sold in that time for my first album released in 06. |

Yow, that stings. Any comparable figures for digital sales? I see the album up on Cytopia...

according to the label, the digital sales are too low to even take seriously.

Oooo... The album was nice Greg. How much did the first one sell? I really liked Cats@play.. Still play some tunes of it in my dj sets.

|
First one sold about 600 copies by the first 6 months of release..

Geez man! Thats like more than 50 % drop!
I guess there needs to be a sudden change in the distribution methods. Maybe artists/labels should setup their own distribution methods, to cut costs and basically to have more control.

'tis the most effective way in such days..times, they are a changin..we gotta push it alot more, directly to music lovers, at parties, online, thru the internet, in the label's home city/country etc.. distributors make bank off selling volume, which is pretty easy for them given the hundreds and hundreds of labels releasing muzik..but on individual levels, us labels are suffering..
full power marketing required!

I'm sure that with time more feedback will be given.
So far it seems that unless you're releasing thru an established label there is a considerable possibility of selling less than 600 copies.

No you got that wrong, even with an established label you are lucky to sell over 600 today, little difference.
Its death....................

so much talking for nothing....
if fans & customers would like to buy music,,
this talking would never exist...
that the trouble....
but you can still continue to make nices theories about what a label/artist should do for improve sellings....
go/continue fuck the underground, good for the vibe good for the human evolution....

The thing to think about is, with all these low sales figures, is it really worth (these days) putting a price on your music?
Our debut LP was released on the 15th of April.
Today, about 3 weeks later, 5225 people, have downloaded it, nope make that 5227
The times have changed, and there's not one thing we can do about it.

Seems to me that labels should be looking at this route:
Make a page with albums available to download for free. Sell ad space (not just google adsense) and put a "donate" button next to the download link.
You'd just have to pay for the bandwidth - no distribution, no cd pressing, no printing of any sort. Could be feasible.....

no way man im not making some bussiness im making art, that kind od methods are shit.
im not sitting a whole month in the studio to make one track and to spend one more month to get money for that.
the mp3 sharing on the internet is not a problem(by the way i think rippers today can make more money from ripping one cd then the label itself) the problem is the abuse of the fast internet, people share each other the music in wav quality, and i am making the quaestion: who is so dump to pay for wav tracks if he already have the wav track before its released?!
people have become tracks sharing junkies, and no they are not satisfied with the released one, and no they are not satisfied with mp3, they want top quality.
and i want to say that we are artist, we spend our time on making the sounds perfect, your sharing music makes us waste that time, and our sounds becomes bad, we are spending time on myspace, forums, msn bla bla talk all the time....
and the promotion and spaming becomes the key
for selling records, not the music

I found the solution to this issue... I got a job.

My solution.
Do:
1) get a job, like Mubali did.
2) release your track and forget about it, moneywise.
3) expect to get some money/fun from lives.
Do not:
1) try to make a living out of psy. You will eventually go bankrupt.
2) try to fix the download problem. It´s here to stay.
3) release that track you know it´s s**tty, it will keep you away from bookings. |
