Hi, everybody.
I know there have been plenty of threads on DAW selection here but I’d like to start one that is a bit different. The existing discussions always come to two kinds of answers:
“They are all capable programs; choose what flow suits you best” and
“You need to try what works best with your studio setup”.
I figured these are two sides of the same answer, really. And this is because most (all?) of you have your favorite set of software plugins and tasty sounding hardware gizmos.
But what if you have none of that? What if a DAW *is* your whole setup?
Let’s say your only hardware is a computer and a set of monitors and your only software is an OS. You are going to install a DAW (the highest-tier edition – “Suite”/”Producer”/”Ultimate”/”Killagh” etc.) and use it for everything: synths, samples, filters, effects, mixing and mastering – the whole thing. Suddenly, it’s not just about workflow, right?
So, let’s imagine Orange just shipped a shiny new production PC to you (or Santa dropped a Mac at your door). A good sound card. A set of monitors. A properly configured OS.
Which DAW will you install?

Logic? never used it though....
And you don't have to install only one... You can have many cracked ones. I don't really care as long as it suits me cause they all are the same. Or ableton cause you gonna perform live already there so just go and use it and thats it. Really no reason for only one. http://soundcloud.com/magimix-1/chilling-forest-whispers

afaik logic offers the most complete package. that saif, i've never been a fan of the es-whatever synths. sculpture and ultrabeat (and of course many of the biult in effects) are great though. |

jsut like to negate that about comment about the es synths, in my opinion they are incredible.
as far as daw, just pick one and go with it, no need to over-analyze. load it up and start exploring. there is no magic solution

+1 I'd have a hard time to chose, and then decide by some random probably. Anyone of (Cubase,Logic,Ableton,ProTools,Reason,Reaper or Renoise) could be the only one if it really should be such bad to chooose just one. Hard to imagine since Imo nothing beats the marriage of multiple daws.

I did the first two Disco Hooligans albums using nothing else besides Logic. Arguably they sounded shite, but I had to choose one, Logic would be it. Brilliant drum synth that I still use for every kick I make, ES2 that I still use sparsly (but sounds great), Sculpture, ES1/m and the fantastic analog sample instruments. Some very good modulation FX, brilliant reverb and delays. If I had 0 hardware I would still be happy making music with just Logic.

Logic is the winner! But nowadays, if you're running an updated OS like Mavericks, would be a good idea to revert back maybe, unless you're willing to start fresh with Logic X and take it from there. I mean, not like you're used to some old third party plug-ins whose developers are taking their time to come to terms with Apple's drop (not bass drop) of 32 bit plug-ins.
All in all, Logic's got a very good package with some instruments that have made it into tons of tracks. If you look at the included instruments, like: ES1, ES2, ESM, they probably rank among the most used for bass. The included effects are dope, the delay and reverbs have been mentioned here, also really like the compressor, even with third parties, get to use it a lot, the FET circuit emulation sometimes is the best thing for drums and easily puts Waves Audio's plug-ins to shame.
