Well, I got it for only 1 week and I demoed it briefly. From the presets and stuff, well this is long time ago, I think it was not so good for psytrance, just the presets itself, that was my first impression off course.
I have the Virus TI, I absolutely love the sound of it. I guess its a matter of taste. But I do agree if you make a track with just virus sounds a bit boring. Its good to use a combination of synths.

Presets almost always suck, you gotta tweak the bugger!!!
The Evolver series by DSI is absolutely fantastic for psy!
Please let there be no doubt about it.
And I can hardly call playing with presets really checking out a synth. Either really try it out, or don't.
But don't say you demoed it when all you have done is fiddle with some presets!

Not necessarily, presets don't always suck. I disagree, there are a lot of Synths with full of production ready to use sounds.
In my opinion, the Poly Evolver was not one of them.
I do not say that its a bad synth, sure if you spend time to program your own sounds, I'm sure there will be good results.
edit:
If I were to compare the 2, I would say the Virus TI has a nice software that comes with it a lot of production ready presets with 3 soft knobs for instant tweakability. It has 3 USB outputs.
The Polyevolver has some good sounds, amazing LEDS and the sound is good.
I would suggest if you have the option off course go to a music store and play with both and then decide. https://www.djjeto.com |

Evolvers are the shit, I'm buying a MEK ASAP. Not good for psytrance? Look at the modulation capabilities...The sound is killer and it's definitely not made or marketed to people who don't know how to run synthesizers. I would consider it a synth-nerds synth, maybe not enough for "14 year old e-tard" but he brings up some excellent points.
I think if you want a really nice sounding creative synth, then go for it. Dave Smith is a genius and knows what he is doing..
fuck presets!!! |

the DSI Evo is a serious synth for the advanced user who can program well.
this is not a preset synth,if one cannot rogram well, he better off buying a Virus.
the Evo is capable of wide range of sounds, routing and modulation are extreme flexible and has many option, basicly from anywhere to anywhere, the 3rd envelope is very useful.
the Input/Output hack is a KILLER. the distortion will rip your speakers off.
the HiPass sounds amazing, as well as the 3 delays, with both Feedback & reversed feedback.
the Feedback button with the Grudge can create some strange out of the world FX.
you get Prophet VS wavetables with option to create your own waves on your PC.
the step seq. can load any patterns from Cubase or anything else for live playing.
Unison mode is HUGE.
you could input anything and use the Evo Envelope/distortion/Hack/Delay with it.
(Try a TB303 thru an Evolver, open Input Hack...)
you could chain a few evolvers for even a bigger sound (too expensive..)
botton line is, on the right hands, this synth is neucler bomb.
- i got my Mono Evolver Keboard a year back, 2 weeks later i bought the Poly. just becouse it is sooooo good.

My friend has a Spectralis, and he does more EBM/Industrial music. The synth sounds wonderful. It's percussion is pretty damn impressive too. At first he hated the sequencer in it, and now he says it's the best sequencer he's ever used.
Problem is though that ever after a year the version 1.0 firmware isn't released, and it had many problems along the way. Apparently this version of the spectralis is being shelved, as another is due to come out, with more resources.
Don't have the money for a poly evolver, but I'm seriosly considering ordering a Mopho. Lot of bang for the buck!

From reading you, it's absolutely great if the user got some experience, but what about beginners ?
I mean, I know the basics of synthetising, I still need lots of experimentations to achieve a decent skill level, would this device be good way to learn the stuff ?
I have the opportunity of trading my Virus TI Desktop for a polyevolver keyboard in good condition, I love my Virus, but I also like changing gear often (as long as it doesn't cost me an arm )... |

im changing my gear all the time, sometimes i miss my old stuff..
if you realy love the Virus, keep it. you might be sorry later for selling it ..
the Evolver is great, it takes time to love it and learn it, but anyone can make great sounds with it, it just takes some time ..
most im portent are the crap presets, they are the worst. change them all.
if you could save up and buy the evo in addition to your Virus .. great.
if not, swap the Virus with the Evo for a day or two just for testing, i belive you both be happy to demo the synths before exchanging them.. if you feel right - keep it.

Sadly, it's an eBay auction, which means I can't try it before making the exchange...
Oh well, I'll try to put some money aside, thanks dude |
