I am considering playing WAVE files from my Laptop with external interface for the mixing, if I can find affordable one. Then I do not need to burn CD's for each set.

That's a great idea. Think of all those poor CD trees we're killing for every DJ set
Also, a very decent interface (imo) is the echo indigo - I played few sets with Virutal DJ connected through the indigo to a mixer - what a treat |

DAT was supercool 12 years ago when many DJ's were playing from Minidisc which had low volume and quality, plugging in a DAT for the set after was quite an impressive Quality improvement.

DAT predates MD and took over from cassette in the beginning of the 90's for most Goa DJ's.
I can't think of any serious DJ that has ever been playing from MD. The reason why Goa DJ's did not use CD's is that a lot of the music was not released or released very late, so one needed to be able to copy the music.
Copying from MD to MD means quite a quality loss and hence it was a really bad format for the purpose.

They were not serious DJ's in the international sense, but a significant number of the people playing various parties in Goa in 1999 were playing from MD and each time a DJ came on with DAT or CD it was definitely a relief.
