ask goa gil, i guess he´s the only person still dj´ing with dat players on this planet...

seriously why would you wann limit yourself by dj´ing with dat players instead of yousing cd players like everybody else?

some point in there i miss?

cheers

@spycht
i´d rathe make a copy to disc marathon with my dat collection than invest money in an outdated (at least in dj´ing context)technique that limits you big time..

of course all is a matter of taste...

still curious why the elesdifrend wants to do that..

But is it seriously so outdated? The thing is that as far as i understand and my experience on the dancefloor is that DAT has a very good soundquality......but again thats why i am requesting info on the forum because i sense here are a lot of experts on the topic so they can argument it better if its just a technology that is outdated...

well,

i´m not talking about the sound quality. the sound of a good dat recorder is beyond doubts superb...

but what about mixing? pitching, setting cue points, forwarding, finding tracks, copying music, buying music... endless list.

the cd medium has a ok sound quality and definitely is the most wide spread technique... if you play somewhere you will always find cd players. why bring your dats?

dats were mainly used for recording purposes and as a dj medium with high quality to replace vinyl (which would melt in goa sun) in the times where cd´s did not exist as mass medium jet...

dat time´s are over... get a laptop with nice soundcard and wave files to play via tracktor and a nice controller.. or play cd´s
original cds (not mp3!) like everbody does...

just my 0.02$

cheers

i just want too say one thing.

I think people have to use what they feel confortable to use, not just the most modern stuff, or the things other people feel fine to use.
so the topic was to ask for a portable Dat player, if you dont have nothing to advice, dont say nothing, just read and pass to next topic.

this is almost the same whit the versus of fruity loops and the others daws.

So elesdifrend, if you like dat players use it, and try to find someting good in that area, i dont know that players very well to advice you.

And sory for this off topic.

see ya

@tricossoma

why do people always get offended so easily?
i am not telling anybody to to anything they don´t want..?
somebody asks for dat players to dj. maybe that somebody is new to dj´ing and heard from dats, but does not know very well the other possibilities besides dat players..
thats why i stated my opinion about these other techniques..
is there something wrong about it?
this forum is ment to get new ideas, broaden the spectrum.. why not mention alternatives if you don´t even know why elesdifrend wants to use dats?

It won't sound better than the original CDs unless you get a 48Khz track direct from the artist. And even then, the mastered CD version could still sound better.

DAT has no advantages and quite a few disadvantages.

Nowadays the most commonly used players for DJ's are using quite ancient converter technology.
Some people might prefer the slight low fi effect that gives, but personally I think TCD-D8 sound easily is beat by any half decent CD player.

Thank you Undertow!
And I would not recommend anything from Sony in case you insist on Dat. Breaks way too fast. Aiwa used to make ok dat players. My choice always remains Tascam.

DAT was supercool 12 years ago when many DJ's were playing from Minidisc which had low volume and quality, plugging in a DAT for the set after was quite an impressive Quality improvement.

Now that CD's are widespread and most tracks are mastered and bounced to 16bit 44.1Khz, its less appealing to play from DAT anymore.
Plus I remember the Sony DAT was such a delicate mechanism.... was scary loading it everytime.

I am considering playing WAVE files from my Laptop with external interface for the mixing, if I can find affordable one. Then I do not need to burn CD's for each set.
