Dark psytrance is a darker and distorted form of psychedelic trance music that is made mostly in Russia & Germany, and more & more in other countries worldwide from last years.
The music is considered to be less popular than mainstream melodic psytrance.
Unlike trance genres that are considered to be "commercial", dark psytrance does not generally use vocals, though there is use of sampling, usually, but not only taken from horror movies. The atmosphere and theme of the tracks often resemble genres like darkcore and cybergrind, and generally draw its influences from the heavy metal culture, however dark psy artists rarely use guitars in their tracks. Dark psytrance is also influnced by Musique concrète, using abstarct and disharmonic synthesized sounds . .
The term "Dark psytrance" firstly used by the audience of more melodic psytrance in the negative meaning to denominate this harder sound, but later turned into a widespread, and not scornful expression.
Dark music may refer to:
Dark ambient, a subgenre of ambient
Darkcore, a subgenre of hardcore EDM
Dark electro, a subgenre of industrial
Dark electronic, variety of experimental electronic subgenres
Dark metal, variety of heavy metal subgenres
Dark psytrance, a subgenre of psychedelic trance
Darkwave, a form of New Wave music

Imo, darkpsy is just a new name tag .. the oldskool goatrance tracks would be dark too .. for example, infected mushroom-psycho, Kode iv, and more ... and all that just got better (production wise and musicwise too).. it is psymusic after all, just heavier and intense ..
Baba Goa Gil can give you the ultimate explanation on this ... hehe ...

when we use the adjetive "dark" in music its for calling music that make us percive the sounds as dark and misterious, but then some dark vibes are also mixed with "melodic" vibes, "crazy" and "bizarre" (samples, tunes, fx).
I think the main goal that an artist looks for when doing Dark psytrance its to make a danceable, pychedelic combination of sound elements that cause Dark feelings .
so i guess evrything that achieve this should be called dark.

Without darkness there can be no light, there is nothing "bad" in this at all..
Even what we perceive as good and evil are figments of our imagination - in nature, there is only life, matter and the space it occupies.
Dark Psychedelic Trance portrays a certain sound, feeling and ambience which connects us with this, without it we would not be whole, without it we would never achieve a true & full connection to the cosmos.
Whether people then choose to form that connection through "dark psy", "black metal" or whatever I dont care, I think everybody should get to know their dark side, so they can control it, and if need be, use it. Exploring this through music is the best way I can think off....
Thats about the most hippie thing I said in my whole life  Its cool though, I think its aaaalmost a bit retro ;-)
Now, shuttup and dance, and if you dont like it, leave and goto sleep. (said in the nicest tone and meaning)

imo most of the "dark" stuff or whatever it is called
is poorly produced noise gabber. fans pretend it as extra psychedelic but for me it is extra annoying.
i´ve been and i even played on several dark psy events and my experience were all the same.
people just monotonously stomp without real joy.
though there are some "dark" psy acts i respect imo most of it is just nothing.
maybe im too old or not psychedelic enough for that kind of "music"
dont wanna offend the "dark" fans here really
i wrote just my opinion.
