Go beyond 16ths to rediculous note divisions like 128th's for that undistincted groove rumble effect.

Use less classic dance sounding percussion and use more organic sounds, like bells and tambourines and such.

Automate much pitch, don't break it down every 30 seconds.

I'd say think ambiguous more than dark. Keep it unexpected. Use a mixture of kicks and always have some distant squelchy sound lingering in the background.

You really could go on forever.

you're all correct if your desire is to create a boring monotonous crap track.

if that's the case you might as well throw in an abuse of both delay and reverb.

the scifi horror sample is a good way to lose all seriousness for sure..

dark CAN be done right. so far we have a recipe for WRONG. where's the real help guys?

I agree with spycht, try making something more original than just another dark psy track that sounds exactly the same as the other 10 compilations that get released every week. [/jaded rant]

Listen to artists like kindzadza, ghreg on earth, jellyheadz, some of the earlier south african dark stuff and other more original dark psy acts and work out what makes them interesting and sound good.

I really don't undertand what is it that you want to know??? no body is going to teach you how to create a "killer dark track" there is no recepie or darkpsy cookbook. if you want to make music just start off and experiment, see what approaches fit you best, develop your own style and techniques, it's what's going to differentiate you from all the others. and if you want to know specific questions about certain aspects of production, I am sure there will be plenty of people who will be able to help and advise you. But honestly a question like "how to create a killer dark track" is pointless.

I think generally the tools in composition for making dissonant dark stuff will work for dissonant dark trance?
i.e. detuned instruments, heavy contrasts, noise & grundgey industrial percs, wholetone or minor scales, chromatic notes, odd modulations.
stumbling disjointed rhythms, autistic type slow repetition.
Personally I also like claustrophobic reverb effects, or just plain weird disorienting reverb.

I think making quality dark trance is harder coz u have to perform a balancing act while harnessing these tools & at the same time keeping continuity flowing in an acceptable and interesting manner.

Its noisier and harder to mix with clarity for one.
dark trance is actually my favorite but only when its interesting artistic and original.
Having said that I wish people would make more interesting dark trance. i.e. not just repetitive dissonant amateur noise. From crappy dark trance I wish to distance my self with snooty aloofness.

I hope no artist seeks tutorials on music for other than for learning purposes. If you copy psychedelia, you end up with the opposite           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet
