maybe you re not talking about drums sounds but more rythmics synths /leads sounds?you could try rate and bit reducers , distortion ,delay and verb ,noise based percussive/leads/fx synth sounds for a more industrial and cold sound (not really what is used but it could work well if you want a beat with a scary athmosphere ,mechanical sound) |

You need to acheive repitition with out seeming repetitve. I think alot of darkpsy can take things from minimal techno and EDM. Slight additions and changes.
I like using reverse reverb, and small cuts from sweeps to add to my percussion. Little sparkles around all your percussion sounds. Connects the tracks to your atmosphere. I also like to add maybe up to 20 snare drums and 20 hh to a track. This way i get alot of variety in my rhythms. Try arranging your synths with a more percussion pattern to them , and experiments with 16th and 32. Velocity changes will add feel to your rhythm as well.
If your using ableton beat repeat can do wonders for rhythm, dblue glitch synth can also work well.
Make sure you create a good stereo image in your percussion but keep your kb line and main snare and hat centered.

Yes you got me.
I do like the dark vibe in music. Say dark as obscure atmospheres, mysterious soundscapes, dense rythms and in general, from dissonant chords to gregorian chants... but i certainly dislike fast agressive music.
That is where i think most darkpsytrance artist fail, because many just setup quick basslines and a lot for chirping screetching noizes with no other intention than causing irritating anxious feelings, at least that is how it works for me.
I do like some stuff tho~
substance23 advice is great! much more work than just using vst presets. |

Aciduss i agree with you in a way....
In my opinion, dark or night or twisted music / psy is anything that has elements of psy incorporated within the tune and conveys a feeling of darkness / twisted emotions / deep and haunting vibes......
in other words, dark psy or whatever we tend to call it should ideally have more of a feeling of the track being dark other than just continuous kick n bass with a variation of percussion.... or continuous looping of random sounds generated using a VST.
I very strongly believe that synths / leads / atmospheric ambience within a track can make it sound dark and deep..... using VST's and Effects is great but utilizing some musical knowledge and following RULES of music rather than chaos can also get you results that sound dark / intense / deep and twisted...... most end up making the same mistake or try and follow others in terms of having a continuous bassline with a kick drum with variations...... once again there are no RULES as such to make MUSIC..... i would never call them RULES i call them certain elements....
Creativity and talent is when someone can utilize these elements of PSY to create a tune that conveys a message of it being either dark / twisted / melodic / groovy or any other emotion...
end of the day when someone achieves that.....then its creation of music.... Using the piano-roll and brushing the melody on it is what I would recommend to anyone into music production..... not just letting a VST produce random sounds keeping a note stretched to 4, 8, 16 or 32 bars using an arp or portamento.... VST's can do wonders if you put some thought behind first composing the melody / sounds / percussion etc....
In my opinion once again i would reiterate that there are no hard and fast RULES of producing MUSIC..... as long as the basic 'do re me fa....' / ragas are followed and the tune sounds good to you... go for it...

Completely agree with both of the above posts
Personally, I'm really excited about where it is going, and I'm trying to nudge the Goa revival and the resurgence of interest in dark music together ... and well I guess we will see what pops out of the other end. But that is where I would like to explore ATM, and am trying to do so with my own stuff.

there just is no darkpsy or whatever genre people found the last few years. there´s only psychedelic music. sometimes it´s fast and sometimes more slow, sometimes chilling deep, sometimes really weired and uplifting. to me there is no genre and no difference

be free to create your atmospheres... don't worry about rules or styles
just take a look in your mix, choose between an empty mixed track or a full mixed!
u can mix up everything |
