Hi.
I've been making darkpsy for about a year now, i used to make alot of goa and general psystuff before that.

I consider myself to be a little above average about it and it all comes out nicely.

I've learned that darkpsy is definately more about rhythm rather than a melodic lead as in other psy genres.

My question is basically how to get those sweet rhythm paths, is there any vst that could be helpfull?
Hit me up with some tips n trix!

I think it's more about just piano rolling 16th/32nd notes in cool ways. The sounds you can generally make with any VST. Vanguard VST is easy to work with, so you might want to check it out, also Sylenth is good.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

Yeah i have tons of vsts, one of them is vanguard. Im only using albino and z3ta tho since i know them inside and out.
I know how to set up and sculpt sound, its just that i dont get that rhytmic feeling i want in darkpsy tracks.

I guess im looking for some sort of effect vst, a pan-gater maybe?

albino
zebra
sylenth1
vanguard
gemini
gladiator (not heard many ppl using it but trust me its one of the best vsts ive ever come across)
alieno

to name a few....

and to add a good rhythm to ur track esp when it comes to night music.... add lots of variations to ur percussion.... sending them to diff fx channels.... adding a bit of delay, flanger, phaser, reverb n c the results.... trial and error by the end of the day honestly.... c wad sounds good to your ears.... and the most imp is trust ur sounds

for effects try using Db Glitch and sugarbyte effectrix.... and for giving a pan gater effect u can use albino and give that gater effect and den pan via automation.... simple

hope it helps....

All about the percussion.

I find it really helps working with a drum roll as opposed to a piano roll for some reason.

I have no idea why - I mean, the input and output is the same after all - but it definitely makes a difference to me!

Also, something like Impulse where I can drag and drop and swap samples around is essential. Nothing kills inspiration faster than browsing through hundreds of folders looking for 'that' sample - I need something where I can quickly chop and change sounds without it distracting me too much from writing the tune.

Otherwise, the standards, for making the percussion sound mint. Gate, Compress, EQ in whatever order you fancy most.

A lot of dark typically features more snares than just the main, and a lot of the energy comes from placing quite highly HP'd snares around the shop, at least it does in my tunes.

I also change my percussion patterns in quite structured ways in comparison to other genres when writing dark, switching percussion parts around with little continuation ever 16 bars or so, but keeping a few main elements for continuity.          .

don't use any effects like gator or something like this

use 1/16 1/32 1/64 long shots on a same note
combine them to make a rhytm, make breaks between the notes to sound like a loop...
use distorted presets, turn off attack, decay and release to 0 and the sustain to max.
its nice to have the sound pitched on 1/32 or 1/64 Lfo.
also u can make some fm presets,
compression is also good here, and limiter to the max, so you have all the power on all the frequencies (eq it perfect before)

use high pass filter and play with the cuttoff, when you make the perfect preset for it, the cuttoff and the midi notes are making this nice rhytm, it's the main sound in the track after the kick and bass, but you should also put some of the percusions here, so dont put too much or too less gain
i hope it helps           VA - Spiritual Science out now!

It's definately a one of a kind synth with some amazing sounding filters. It takes a while to get used to programming compared to other synths, but it's got the goods.

Really nice for clangy madness

It is funny how a thread about rythm ends up being about vsts and presets.

IHMO you need no specific vst nor presets... you need to know what "good rythm" is all about first... but i guess it is always easier when a machine does the work for you.

No wonder why most Darkpsy sounds just like wacky machineguns screetching mixed with screaming and broken crystal noises.

Anyway dark is not my cup of tea... over 150 bpms everything seems like undanceable aggressive beats to me.

flame me.

Flame flame!
Do you know what good rhythm is about?

i like some high bpm tracks, and i even think that it can be very mental with a 150+bpm track with a fullon bass... some cool deep atmospheres to that and it can be real nice to trance out to

I'm not gonna flame but I am gonna say I've heard trance that sounded slow at 160bpm ... it kind of starts to 'float' after a certain point, and trance that sounded awfully, awfully busy at 120 bpm.

If you are saying you don't like aggressive dark fast music, cool, fair enough ... each to their own . But not all dark music is either aggressive, or fast - I've written dark trance at 120bpms with big melodies and no buzz buzz buzz noises. That isn't typical, no, but it is just an illustration that there is more to dark music than very fast bpm and aggression. There si more to very fast music than darkness and aggression. There is more to aggressive music than darkness and speed. In fact, these three things need not be related at all!
