What I did in Crystal was:
-set Voice.1 to a sine wave:
-set mod-envelope1 to Voice.1(pitch);
-used no attack, short exponential decay;
-copied mod-envelope to Voice.1(amplitude);
This got me very close. I tweaked the decay of the modulation, then the decay of the amplitude, and added a second little "echo hump" in the amplitude envelope to get some thump out of the kick. Outside of the VST, I put a HP24dB@39Hz. |

But will it sound OK at 170 BPM in a darkpsy tune?
Mine probably won't work in fast craziness. But it was a good first lesson in Ableton for me anyway.
BTW, how did you make yours?

I used Logic's native drum synth, Ultrabeat. Did not do any layering, just a single sine wave oscillator. I then used Logic's native compressor with the FET circuit engaged and Logic's native Channel EQ.
Have no clue if its going to work in a tune as fast as you say though...at them BPMs things get way too fast to enjoy a nice bottom end. My guess is that you would have to sacrifice the bottom end of either the kick, or the bass....I mean even for 16th basslines, the tempo is too fast to get a nice fat 16th bass note. You could have a nice fat kick with the tail crossing over to the bass notes, that would occupy the low mid and above, part of the spectrum, but that is just my assumption. I have made drum n bass tunes at that tempo, but the bassline and drum patterns do not follow the trance, production manual. Long legato notes overlapping with the kick, which is not nearly as big in the bottom end as the trance kicks of tunes in "normal psy-trance" BPM.

I began listening to that clip but the shakes started about 20 seconds in and I had to stop.

psykick (free soft from speakafreaka) and bazzism are great tools for dark (faster bpm) kicks.
offtopic: i think those tools are not suitable for long prog kicks where the tail needs to cover the first B of the KBBB. They are to short on the longest setting.
Is there a way to make kicks from bazzism and psykick longer?

hehe, yep i was wrong altough the envelope in bazzism does not allow to shape the long tail but i think thats not a big problem.

I havent used bazzism for long,but I see you can go up to 594 ms ... that should be too long hehe
I think for ultra fast speed tempo,kicks about 120-150 ms are quite appropriate.There is a lot of space from 150 to almost 600 ms..should work .
If not maybe bounce it and stretch it and - transpose it or sth like this hehe dunno.

I haven't managed to get a single decent kick out of Psykick.
Seems to be awfully hard to get something going.

really?!
I find it to be the easiest tool to use to get just what I want.
I ignore all the EQ's and volume envelope stuff and then just work it one pitch envelope at a time starting with the sub frequency then the top of the click then fine tuning the tone in the middle.
Generally I have a 1ms envelope down from 12000 to 4000 then from there to 140 at about 5ms then from there to the tails length depending on the tempo.
Or for just a clicky kick without much of that mid character I go straight from 12000 to 150.
Way more efficent than bazzism and....*drum roll* FREE! |

Horses, courses.
Unsurprisingly, I use my own stuff as it makes sense to my brain and I know it inside out...
... but if I found a solution that made more sense to me I wouldn't hesitate to employ it.
There are several good kick drum soft synths out there. Some are regular synths which can also do kick drums. Some are specifically made for kick synthesis.
Write nothing off, and don't assume failiure to get a good tone is the synths fault.

darkpsy kicks have to be punch... high... and most of the times you might cut its ending.... fading out too
choose a nice kick sample, matched with the bass.... both in the same key...
just try it.... baterry samples are great |

That's the everrecurring issue with fast music. Can the bass come through before the note retriggers? In my experience, using a higher note on the bassline (E or up) will transmit much better than a lower one based upon the fundamental frequency. A1 is at 55hz and since most kickdrums are usually around 60hz that seems like a good place to start for fast music.
