Dark psytrance situation in australia ?

i'm planning to come to australia for my further studies...
so my question is where will i get dark psytrance parties in australia... ?
and how much is the genre appreciated and in what parts ....
so that i can decide the place where i want to go for my studies...

Well,
Depends what type of Dark Psytrance you like.
Overall it isn't hugely popular, you are likely to get 1 or 2 sets of dark psy at night during a party... You won't get a whole party of Dark psy...
In QLD the flavour is for scandinavian forest trance like Derango, Procs, Traskel etc etc ...
In Australia there is more popularity with morning full-on and progressive music...

Newcaslte near Sydney, in NSW supports dark psy very well and is very accessible by car and train from Sydney. Some Sydney crews also actively support it (some also have none). Melbourne is apparently getting some growing support for it now too, but is still apparently dominated by progressive/electro/minimal and israeli full on.
Also need I mention that Sydney is the only city to feature a 24hr party with the psytrance legend and a man with a reputation for champoning dark psy through his label, his own music and his parties, namely... Goa Gil. Twisted Mind-Altering Night-time Psychedelia...

What are you studying? maybe you should get the best place to study rather than the best place for dark psy! hehehe
Also agreed with Cyberwulf bout the newcastle scene, though it really depends on what type of "dark psy" you are into  |

well i've recently finished my audio engineering diploma in india. and i'm thinking of doing electronic music production course in australia.
i have option of byron bay and melbourne.
with the replies here i think i'll have to think more about melbourne now.

Byron Bay is a great location, more touristy than it used to be, but its a beach side location which will give you a good taste of a more natural Australian environment, and its party scene is famous internationally with the likes of Australia's most famous artist Space Tribe living there when in Oz. It's also only about 1-2hrs drive from the city of Brisbane and places like the sunshine coast and the goldcoast (which has the touristy Surfers Paradise)

SAE is shit. From what I have heard it is a complete waste of money... but hey lots of people go there so it must be good!
Queensland University of Technology has the best Digital Music program in Australia I recken.
I am currently beginning my second year of University there and I will be studying a full year of composing for digital environments.  Mostly using Max/MSP
www.qut.edu.au
We learn Pro-Tools, Logic, Ableton, Max/MSP and actually learn the physics, and music theory and everything behind it...
From what I have heard at SAE you are mostly paying to use the expensive gear, but maybe not learning as much....

Yep also don't forget that Melbourne is hosting a 3 hour Kindzadza set on NYE As well as Electrypnose in Byron Bay the following weekend I think? So yeah, there is some dark psy in australia for sure, but not as much and as quality as there should be. Sydney dark psy scene deterirated majorly after selfish Cyberwlf abandoned it to go play in Japan and Europe... what a loser!!! |

byron bay gave birth to talents like aghori tantrik.
there is nimbin, a small town, near byron. IMHo it is the most psychedelic little town you would find on tht huge continent. You will also be exposed to a number of musical genres in byron bay, they have jazz, blues festivals all the time.
SAE also boasts its best equipped campus at Byron, so you know your getting the best
