The reason I put horror in the title is cause I really like the trax with samples from horror movies of like people getting killed and girls screaming NOOOOOO HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If its done right its super trippy. Two examples would be Necropsycho - Fuck Brains and Magma Ohm vs. Succubus - Shades Of The Night.

ok, so I'm *really* not trying to start an argument or create any bad vibes, just genuinely curious... why do you like this? You said "If its done right its super trippy" - could you elaborate, or be more specific? I've been trying for years to figure out why people like this kind of thing in psytrance, and never really gotten much of an answer.

And let me acknowledge my own bias - I had a terrible experience at a party with a female friend of mine who was deeply into a trance, heard some music like this, and had a complete meltdown. She had struggled with PTSD for years as a result of a sexual assault when she was a teenager, and hearing samples in music that sounded like a woman being raped/tortured, while in a trance state, pushed her over the edge.

and btw, I have nothing against dark music as a whole, and have found some great new tracks reading this thread, it's just the specific inclusion of the "Horror" stuff that I'm so confused/disturbed by.           Psytrance DJ sets-->

I agree with MsoB here; I don't get the death/rape scream samples.

I love darkness, metal, darkpsy and horror flicks, but horror samples in music at a psychedelic party never seemed like a good idea to me.

Obviously, many people can handle it, but I prefer to give the few people who may be reminded of extremely traumatic events the benefit of doubt, and therefore refrain from using such samples to make my music sound 'darker'.

The mystic primordial force of darkness doesn't equal evil, violence & death" in my personal experience.

I know a LOT of people who are 100% into darkpsy but put up a strong objection to those kinds of samples. Most of the people I'm thinking of are female friends and acquaintances of mine who have been through some kind of violent trauma at one point in their lives.

I'm not a big fan of them, either, personally.

Personally I draw the line at crying/moaning/whimpering type sounds, mainly because I've heard these sorts of sounds used very creatively in the past (mainly in ambient style music). Although I wouldn't use those sounds in psy-trance. I can tolerate those sorts of sounds in others' music when I hear them but it kind of makes me go "meh". I like to think most dark artists can do better than that.

Well, maybe moaning. Certain kinds.

Overall I think most of those sounds are cliche at best and while I agree that "dark" music can be about confronting the darker side of oneself, as was mentioned above, those types of sounds don't need to be heard by certain people on hallucinogenics at 1 kw+. The dancefloor while on drugs isn't always the place for those sorts of things to be confronted. Certain things people need to work through privately, on their own time... it shouldn't be forced on them unwillingly/unsuspectingly.

That's my opinion anyway.

Looks like the new generation begs to differ and feels the need to indulge horror matters to satisfy they hunger for thrills. Reflection of today's world?

I think people feel vulnerable in today's world, and, scared of mind control, guilt complex, lack of voice and real social power, they feel that they need to cover themselves with a "dark" blanket to intimidate other "dark forces". Could probably elaborate on it better, but I am still trying to comprehend the "horror/dark/pain/blood" notion myself.

I guess I like these samples because it brings me back to when I was about 9 or 10 and used to watch alot of 80's slasher flicks. Also when I said its trippy I meant that the screams are instruments like anything else in psy and its cool to hear a nice scream with some effect and then a nasty fast dark beat drops in right after. I dunno I just like those kind of hooks. I think people are looking too deeply into this. This does not reflect how I feel towards society. ITS JUST MUSIC PEOPLE!

Hey, it's okay if you like that sort of thing... the rest of us are just offering our own opinions

I guess it makes me think of it a bit more seriously when I see someone close to be be deeply shaken by it... but that wouldn't be any different than any other music or media in general.

P.S. A bit off topic, but... even though I like my psy on the darker side, I'm REALLY squeamish when it comes to torture, blood, guts, limbs twisted in unnatural ways, bones sticking out... that sort of thing. One time I was in a piercing studio watching a guy get his back pierced, and all the popping and crunching sounds of the needle sliding under the skin along his spine made me almost pass out. My vision began clouding over with white starry fog starting at the peripherals and heading inward, and I had to go outside and sit down. The same thing happened another time when I walked past a guy who had been in some kind of horrible accident, and his leg was in a metal cage with rods and pins and shit sticking out of his leg. He saw me notice it, and stopped me and began enthusiastically describing all the pretty details. I wonder if that sort of thing has an affect on my opinion.

Ironically, my roommate is just the opposite. Apparently he dreams of those sorts of things regularly, and I've seen him watch movies like Cannibal Holocaust and laugh at the gory parts like it was a comedy, while eating spaghetti and meat sauce.

That cinortele guy mentioned above did a couple vids of my music, and there's one that I can't even watch... with scenes from "The Ring" where severed fingers impale themselves on rusty nails and other fun stuff. Talented guy for sure, and I love what he does, but sometimes I wonder who the #%@^ he thinks I am anyway, LOL!

I do think it's a fascinating thing to see how different people perceive different kinds of sensory input (i.e. music, in tis case) and I don't hold a judgment as to what's "right" or not because it's just how people see the world. People have always been like that and it's not going to change. I'm sure that 50,000 years from now, demented people are still going to be killing each other gruesomely with knives, for example. (Not that I think that THAT is right, of course, which it isn't! Maybe I should make that clear, haha)

Oh well... live and let live (lol)

cool, thanks for the responses. It's good to know that I'm not the only one who likes dark music, but doesn't like to equate dark with murder/rape/torture, etc.

I guess I just wish there was some sort of subgenre distinction that would make it easy for party-goers to identify which DJs or Live acts will be using samples like that, so they could avoid that stuff if they choose... (I also feel this way about certain VJs, who use really disturbing, violent images in their video work.)

But at the same time, psytrance is already such a tangled and convoluted mess of subgenres, the last thing we need is more division or rules... oh well

I have definitely had this same thought myself, many times. I really make an effort to not judge people, but I always wonder if some people are so attracted to "evil", and make such an effort to portray themselves as evil, just as a defense mechanism for their own feelings of isolation, vulnerability, and fear... I know I used to do that.
