i just listend to some bass heavy music in a pair of "koss sb45" some real shitty headphones with a mic..

my ears are crushed, i just listend for like 15 min and still i can feel it...

so a varning for everyone... use quality headphones, it can be a matter of getting hearing problems or not...

Why your ears are crushed? was the music that bad?

Was it because of too much bass? Or was there a sudden peak in the audio? Or did the mic get feedback or what?

I prefer open can headphones, they have much more open sound. My ears grow far less tired on that kind of headphones. In live performance they are a bit useless, though

Hey texmex

i think there was something with the bass. it sounded real strange, like the headphones couldnt cope with the bass. sort of gulping...

i will make a more accurate analyse of them...

My AKG-k240 is semi open and they are my most comfortable headphones, but i will look up a pair of open....

got any to recommend?

Grado headphones sounds great, but they are not made for producing. i have the cheapest model, and they are really nice. (SR-60)
Anyhow, i think they can be used both for producing and enjoying music on, they also sit really nice, very comfortable.

Digital Psyence, i got grados too, and they're great! I got the SR-80. I use them for producing. they have quite natrual frequency response, bass isn't overly emphasized.

The ear pads were a bit uncomfortable at the beginning (a lot of people have said this too), but either they have adapted my ear shape or my ears are now used to them there are also some replacement pads which are softier.

I surely recommend those.

BTW, I also have Koss the Plug earphones, and while the bass is extremely boosted, they are very articulated. May sound silly, but I actually hear features of different sounds I haven't heard before. I use them with mp3 player with bass turned down to minimum in the eq. And they're cheap too I wouldn't use them for producing, too saturated response, but maybe they could be used for doing comparision with speakers/headphones.

Texmex:

Thats what i love about them. The bass, it sounds really nice, and much more natural. Much better than that flat Senheiser bass. Really good value for a small amount of money.

u should really go check'em out, New Era Scientist

I'd recommend Beyerdynamic DT250. It's their "cheap" model and I own them - couldn't be more satisfied. I just bought myself a pair of monitors and before I only produced in headphones - and DT250, who are adapted for producing, are just what I looked for. Seems some of you have grown "tired" by listening in your headphones while DT250 is quite renowned for not causing the listener to get tired easily and these headphones are closed. I think they have a great response and well, I just simply love em. I suggest you go check em out if you look for a pair to produce with.

Edit: Are we just about to make this into "Mothers Of All Headphones" thread?            Aural transmissions from the deep forests of Sweden

S.D6 - agreed, i would only use headphones for detail listening if i had my own house...

but truth is that i have neighbours and i want to listen in full spectrum for most of the time....

zafer - wow.. this i must try
does it work?
are you sure?
*irony*

yeah i tried lower volume... but if the headphones sux you wont have much detail... like hard pressure around the ear due to bad foam and too bass heavy...
and due to long sessions without breaks the volume easily goes up... instead of keeping a good friendly volume...

but yeah your answer is valid, but still the headphones needs to be comfy and good balanced...
