shamans in ancient china used dancing and chanting to cure illness. the liver is responsible for a harmonious movement of qi. if it is constrained, things get stagnant and stuck. the liver also controls the sinews, and when they are tight, the flow is hindered. liver's meridian starts at the big toe and there is an internal branch that goes through the brain to the top of the head - at a point called DU 20, •S˜ð, the hundred convergences. dancing is one of the ways to open this point, which allows for the cosmic soul (hun) to enter. this point also represents the intersection point of the six yang channels and the Du(governing) meridian.
the Daoist Storehouse refers to the head as the most important part of the body, with DU 20 symbolizing the meeting place of one hundred spirits. this opening can be achieved through meditation, drumming, spinning, and trances, although some chose to achieve this with the use of psychedelic drugs, which have a damaging effect on the liver.
these drugs often have an effect on the pupils, causing them to dilate and take more in from the world. these methods rattle the brain and onefs consciousness. at the point that the portals cannot handle it anymore, they open up - the third eye opens up as well and information can be transmitted. the portals are the sensory orifices and are the link to the world. in changing ones vision of the world one can ultimately change onefs spirit and the way one views the world.
in Daoist alchemical qi gong, one endeavors to turn the dense jing essence into that which is ethereal and does not judge: shen/spirit. When the spirit is redeemed and complete, one becomes enlightened. through this practice, one learns how to become empty through the process of Lian Shen Hua Xu. here one sheds the ego and becomes present with consciousness. upon achieving this state, one may feel pressure at the third eye and DU 20. as these areas begin to open, colors are changed, as are the senses of scent and taste. everything becomes more pure, as though emanating aroma.
