DAKINI NEWSLETTER, SUMMER'S END, 2002.
Hello everyone, hope you've all had a relaxing, sun-baked summer!
While you've been off on the beach, we're been stuck in Tokyo finally
getting some new projects into shape. Bad news for us -- no vacation! --
but good news for you! Our release schedule is finally coming together,
so take a look at what's coming up... ;-)
____ NEW RELEASE: TOIRES "Oued-Sanati"____________________
Like Makyo, Toires is an artist interested in the mix of cultures,
Western & Arabic, traditional & Modern. French by nationality, Florian
(Toires) is married to a Moroccan, and spends much of his time
travelling throughout the Mahgreb. These albums are a kind of diary,
containing the sounds & impressions of his journeys mixed in with some
deep dub bass and hypnotic drum loops. The music includes everything
from a track written in the Sahara desert to a living room session with
Natacha Atlas. (Toires will be mixing several tracks on Natacha's next
album.)
"Sanati" is more a collage of arabic sounds --- both played & sampled
--- over beats, while "Oued" is more electronic & ambient, a journey
into the desert stars. After a number of appearances on compilations on
labels like Blue Room Released and Infinium, "Oued-Sanati" is a
summation of his work so far, (featuring tracks recorded between
1997-2001) and an album that will certainly appeal to fans of
ethno-ambient.
In a time where the divide between the West and Islam grows ever wider,
Toires' album bridges that gap, and suggests a future of unity.

1. JAIRAMJI "Kindred Spirits"
A full album of deep but highly melodic ambient from this UK artist, who
has released tracks on Six Degrees and Liquid Sound Design. A smooth mix
of acoustic and electronic sounds, featuring vocals, guitars, flutes,
and frame drums mixed with subtle keyboards and a smattering of beats.
Closes with an absolutely epic track that is the best thing we've heard
all year. Look for it this Fall.
2. SKY DANCING vol. 3
At last! The third and final installment with the latest tracks from
MAKYO, JAIA, and ISHQ, new music from SEVDA and KARSH KALE, and a few
surprises. Ethereal grooves and deep spaces. Release date is Jan. 2003.
3. Also in progress is the new sub-label comp., GREEN FEATHER, a
collection of more "herbally-inspired" sounds. And two or three other
secret projects... ;-)

(I%(J JAIA's album has been re-pressed, so all those people who've been
asking for it, here's your chance.
(I%(J ISHQ is nearly sold out and won't be re-pressed anytime soon. Maybe

(I%(J Saturday, Sept. 7th at Aoyama CAY will be another KERVAN SERAI party,
organised by GORO & MISHAAL, and featuring all your favorite Skydancers:
MISHAAL, SHALA & LALE, NADIAH, KAZUMI, KAHINA, SAHIRA, and more.
Live music by GORO, SEVDA (GORO, MADOKA, HATAKEN), YUUICHI, and KEIKU.
DJ sets by MAKYO, HIYOSHI, and DEPTH.
***Note: this will be the LAST Dakini-related party at CAY, as they're
closing their doors to live music as of October. So expect this one to
be a blow-out!
(I%(J You can also catch MAKYO dj-ing at Tantra in Roppongi (8:00-11:00 pm)
on 8/30, along with Mishaal and her Samanyolu troupe. Be sure to get off
the elevator at the bar floor, not the strip club!
Makyo will also be dj-ing in the garden at the Hara-Bijutsukan on 9/16
at the Simon Fisher Turner concert, 5:30-8:30 pm.
