Subject: DAKINI NEWSLETTER~Early winter 2004
From: Dakinis <skydancers@dakinirecords.com>

Hi all,

It's last Dakini letter in 2004!

===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•
1. NEW RELEASE!! ::: DAK2114, ADHAM SHAIKH "Fusion"
2. Collector's item ::: DAK2006, Padmasana "A Universal Consciousness"
3. SEISEN ITO DVD
4. Price changes
5. Live schedule
===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•===•

----------------------------------------------
1. NEW RELEASE!! DAK2114, ADHAM SHAIKH "Fusion"
----------------------------------------------
Canadian-based Adham has been one of our favorite ambient producers for a
loooong time. Starting with his 1994 album of deep Indian-inflected ambient
"Journey To The Sun" (Instinct), we've watched his production and
composition skills grow with each release: "Drift" (Instinct, 1996), "Ekko"
(Interchill 1998), and "Essence" (Sonicturtle, 2002). But if there's one
thing that remains constant, it's Adham's unique ability to blend live
elements with the production and detail of studio music. "Fusion" may be his
best blend yet: tracks like "Krishna Raga" and "Flying Beyond" mix long,
flowing solos on Indian instruments like bansuri and sitar with hypnotic,
percussion & bass-driven grooves. "Dubfire" shows a more ambient side, with
soft gamelan-like phrases and glistening synths echoing out in a wash of dub
delay. There's even a phat breakbeat-dub remix of "Infusion" (from the
"Manna Medicine" comp. or Liquid Sound Design), featuring the clean,
spacious guitar phrasings of Tim Floyd. All in all, an album that's
perfectly pitched between the "jambient" of Jairamji and the tighter,
club-haze electronica of Makyo. On sale now.

-------------------------------------------------
2. DAK2006, PADMASANA "A Universal Consciousness"
-------------------------------------------------
We pressed 500 copies of this 20-minute, one-track e.p. as a freebie that we
gave away with Hikari's Dakini design T-shirts in Fall 2000. Very few copies
were made available for sale, but we often hear from people looking for this
one. Anyway, we found 30 extra album sleeves in storage, so we have made 30
high-quality, lo-speed home-burned cds with the original disc art. These are
available for $10, plus postage, strictly on a first-come, first-served
basis. Perhaps Padmasana's deepest, most spaced-out track, and that's
certainly saying something!

----------------
3. SEISEN ITO DVD
----------------
Fans of Dakini will know Seisen as the artist who did the fantastic artwork
for all three Sky Dancing compilations. His work is done entirely by hand,
with paint and brushes, no computers whatsoever, which may be hard to
believe. He's just released a limited edition (500 copies) DVD compilation
of his work, set to music, much of it from the Dakini catalogue. It's hard
to explain, but basically it's a trip through literally hundreds of
paintings he's produced, using close-ups, fades, dissolves, all mixed to a
variety of ambient tracks, including Makyo and Ochi Brothers. Visit the
Dakini website to check out some images. We have 20 copies available for
sale, again, first-come, first-served.

-------------
4. PRICE HIKE
-------------
And now for the bad news... All our overseas prices will increase by $1, and
airmail by .50 cents, due to the weakening US currency. (Thanks in part to
George Bush's fucked-up economic policies.) We've held our prices as the
dollar dropped from 130 yen to 102 yen (as of Friday), but we finally had to
make an increase. Sorry! The good news is you can buy with the old prices
through the end of December. Just write "Mailing List Discount" in the
"Comments" section of your on-line order form, and take $1 off the price of
each cd you order.

--------------
5. LIVE UPDATE
--------------
Ok, it was a slow year for us, but we hope to do a lot more Dakini Nights
parties in 2005. First up will be Adham Shaikh, live and dj-ing, at Aoyama
Cay on 2/19. Two other events are already being planned... until then,
here's what's up:

12/17-23 -- SEISEN ITO exhibition (*Opening party on 12/18)
12/19 -- MAKYO with "Yildiz Tribe", MISHAAL's new belly-dance group, at
Office, Gaienmae
1/15 -- "Dakini Unplugged vol.1", Indian Santoor with double percussions

--------------
6. OTHER NEWS
--------------
ISHQ continues to work on his 2nd album; his side-project, Virtual, has an
album in the can, and it should be out any day now on his own label ...
Makyo's next album is done but for one last track, and will be out in Spring
2005; a remix album will follow... Greg Hunter has been busy recording in
Egypt and has a full album in the works...
Puff Dragon is also working on & off on his debut album, which hopefully
will not include any Barry Manilow samples...
Finally, a word on burning and ripping. Basically, times are quite tough for
virtually every label and artist I know, and we're no exception. If you want
to hear more of the music you love, please do your best to support the
artists & musicians! Particularly with this sort of music, it requires an
insane amount of time in the studio to create, and the artists need to sell
some cds to have the time/resources to make that happen. Do us & yourself a
favor and don't burn or rip except for personal use. Also, FYI, burned cds
aren's coated like factory pressed discs, so their lifespan is only 3 to 5
years (as opposed to 20+ for proper pressings), not to mention the
difference in sound quality. And it's bad karma! So don't say we didn't warn
you. ;-)

Shanti,

Gio&Keiku

Adham Shaikh's "Fusion" , I could not recommend highly enough! probably my #1 for 2004. If you like a bit of ethno-novelty and rhythm - you would be nuts to miss it!

Padmasana "A Universal Consciousness"
is a 20 minuite uptempo jaunt that has never really pleased my senses. Although all other tracks by this collaboration are recommended!

This has to be one of my favourite tracks from Gio. It blew my head off when I first heard it. A solid meditation track. It has it's uptempo moments , but it is still very deep and enlightening. I recommend it to any Gio fan. Well worth the listen. Maybe I can get my hands on one of these copies. I would love to spin this someday.

Peace

Gio has really excellent taste, beyond a doubt... i've found myself 'not getting' some of his selections.... and then kicking myself - after completely falling in love with them years later.

it's been quite a while... i'll give it another listen MaNaMao ...!

I heard this recently and loved it straight away.
Indeed has some very deep moments, and slows down really nicely towards the end. Gio Makyo really is a master!            - - It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice... - -
