NEW RELEASE: LUMIN "Ketri"
== Balkan breaks & middle-eastern moods ==
Our 18th cd is by San Francisco ethno-electronic fusion pioneers Lumin, who have previously recorded albums for SF labels Hearts of Space and City of Tribes. "Ketri" is Lumin's 3rd album and first for Dakini. Their first album "Datura" explored deep ethno-ambient moods, while their 2nd album "Hadra" saw them move in an ethno-drum-n-bass direction; this album became a favorite on California's tribal bellydance scene, and gathered heavy airplay on national radio program "Echoes" on NPR. "Ketri" is a further exploration of that world-meets-club sound, but moving in many directions at once. Explosive drum-n-bass compositions like "Izgrala" and "Tashto" will be familiar to fans of "Hadra", but the album explores hypno-dub-trance with "Gostiki", sultry downtempo with "Ketri" and "Napali", and absolutely original stylings like the Balkan electro of "Dimcho", the 7-beat tabla-breaks of "Lycian Way", and the haunting, mysterious closing track "Rusalki".
Throughout the album, vocalist Irina Mikhailova (formerly of Medicine Drum) takes traditional Balkan, Russian, and gypsy songs and shapes them to her unique vocal style, ranging from the full-throated power of "Heyamo" to the gentle, almost whispered "Rusalki". Supporting the vocals are intricate, wisely chosen arrangements of many different instruments, like Turkish oud, hammer dulcimer, and yali tambour, played by multi-instrumentalist Jef Stott (formerly of Stellamara, and now signed to Six Degrees). And the electronic arrangements --unlike so much of the "world beats" dreck out there -- have been produced by people (Stott and arranger Michael Emenau) who know what's happening with the vocals and instruments. The result, an album of power, beauty, and original expression, full of timeless melodies and absolutely modern production. The entire album was mixed at the final stage by Dakini Records artist Toires, a French producer of phat North African dub-funk, who brings a refined sense of space and clarity to the album.

FORTHCOMING:
Well, we always think we'll be doing more than one release in a year, but it rarely turns out that way! In an age of ripping and burning, it takes a lot more concentration and effort on each individual release now to be able to sell enough to keep going. The market, as anyone will tell you, is not great these days, as more people choose to just take artists' music instead of supporting them. Well, if you're reading this, odds are that you're not one of those people ;-) and we thank you for your support. It really is thanks to the folks who support us that we can continue this venture into underground sounds...
Anyway, there's a lot of stuff in progress, we'll see what comes in first. Makyo has two mini-albums written, "Karuna" and another un-named tribal dub project. These both need final mixing and polishing. Expect the first next Spring. Gus Till is plugging away at a full album of tribal madness like his track "Rainsong" on the Tribal Matrix comp. Speaking of which, we will start compiling its follow-up in 2008 -- Tribal Matrix: Reloaded. (Only joking!) The elusive Greg Hunter also seems to be ready with something, we shall see... There's also a Tokyo group we are interested in signing.. more info as it firms up.
OTHER RECENT NEWS:
-- Makyo finished up a remix of California-based fusion/gothic bellydance artist Solace. The hypno-breakbeat remix of "Naga" can be found on "Very Bellydance 4", a Japan-only release. We will have some copies on the site soon, with listening too.
-- Dakini finally has a Myspace page. There's an edit of a new Lumin track available as a free download. Also up is an EXCLUSIVE and lushlushlush remix of "Nothing Is Real" by Makyo alter-ego Macchiato. Get them while you can.
Thanks to everyone who has been in touch with us, and as always, feel free to write. We like to hear what you're enjoying, what you'd like to hear more of, what works and what doesn't about the site, where you've heard our music... Keep in touch people.

There is quite a lot of more uptempo stuff on this album. The first track is almost drum & bass. I listened to it once in a shop all the way through & it seemed really nice. Kind of upper middle in my want list now |
