i find this a bit sad/disturbing yet not suprising >
.
Hoping that Summer Solstice finds you all well.
Below are a few quick updates on what we've been up to, including our new release...

-------------------------------
DRUMSPYDER : : Kytheria (DAK2120)

SF-based producer/percussionist Drumspyder unleashes his long-awaited debut full-length album on Dakini, with 14 absolutely phat and funky trax of percussive desert deep house and dub. With a clean, powerful sound that's guaranteed to cut through any dancefloor, Drumspyder --aka Scott Sterling-- blends live middle eastern percussion and cool electronic stylings into a hypnotic yet varied dancefloor mix, from slinky & seductive downtempo to funky, bass-bumpin' house. His tracks and remixes have appeared on Dakini, Desert Trax, Caravan, Water Music and Six Degrees, as well as numerous bellydance DVDs and two self-released eps. "Kytheria" represents a further development of his sound, with more varied textures and melodies over his trademark darbukka-driven rhythms.

-------------------------------
MAKYO : Live at Boom Festival 2010
Makyo has morphed from a studio-only project into a full live act and has been playing "Hindustani dub" live around Japan for the past few months. The live band fully blends the hypnotic electronic stylings Makyo is known for with eastern instruments like the santoor, saz, rubab, darbukka, tabla, and daf. The live set features a lot of improvisation, and the electronic side of the mix is just as live as the instruments. (This is NOT a "press play" laptop live set!) Makyo also features the mystical oriental dance of Hayati, and some live videos can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/user/giomakyo
Makyo's first live appearance outside of Japan will be at the Boom Festival in Portugal from August 18th - 26th. Makyo plays live at the Ambient Stage on 8/22, and again --as the closing act -- on the Sacred Fire stage on 8/25. (Gio will also be dj-ing at the ambient stage on 8/24.) Ishq, Gus Till, System 7 and many other recommended artists will also be appearing. For full info, see: http://www.boomfestival.org/boom2010/

-------------------------------

MAKYO: "VISMAYA" Re-press:

"Vismaya", Makyo's 3rd album originally released on Dakini in 1999 in a limited pressing of only 1,000 copies, was re-pressed late last year when we saw it was selling for $100 or more on-line. Always trying to help our fans. The re-press is already halfway gone, so get it now if you want to complete your Makyo collection, the chances of a 3rd pressing are very slim. This is Makyo's most ambient album, with 2 epic tracks that clock in at around 42 minutes total. Available only on our website, not from any other retailers.

-------------------------------

GOING OUT OF PRINT:

Jairamji and Live at Dakini Nights are both out of print, but we received about 20 copies of each back from a distributor. So act now if you want these in your collection. Sky Dancing 3 should be out of print within the next month or two as well. While we'd like to keep everything in print as cds --our preferred format -- demand is low, so we're sad to say most of this stuff will be going out of print for good. So get it now before it costs $100 on Discogs.com ;-)

-------------------------------

DIGITAL DOWNLOAD SALES, RIPPING, THE FUTURE OF THE LABEL:

Despite the fact that we loathe --LOATHE!!! -- the sound of mp3, repeated requests from our customers and the sense that cd sales are coming to a dead-end means we will be moving to offer our catalogue on most digital download platforms as of this summer. (Late July or so.) We will continue to release on cd as well, in more limited quantities because: a.) we feel that the artwork is also an important part of what we do; and b.) the sound quality is much better (you don't lose the low and high end!). Also, the hard copy will be around long after mp3s will no longer be playable on Mac OSXIII or whatever ;-)

Finally, a note on "ripping" and the the increasing piracy of our music on-line: I realise people have different views on this, and I won't go into the arguments here. Suffice to say that it's getting out of control to the point where it's becoming nearly impossible economically to continue releasing music as a label. I'm not saying this to be dramatic; it's simply the reality. While people think music should be "free" these days, it does indeed cost money to create and produce, and unless we can earn that back -- let alone make a profit -- it should be fairly obvious we can't continue. Our most recent release, Tribal Matrix 2 -- judging just by the illegal downloads we were able to track -- was ripped nearly 20,000 times in the first month of release, a point where we had seen maybe 800 in actual sales. A year + later we still haven't reached the break-even point on that release, and the illegal download numbers continue to swell. Which is frustrating, depressing, and more.

I realise that most of you who are reading this aren't the people who are doing this to us, so I don't want to lecture you. But we are really teetering on the brink, as are most labels and artists I know. We've always managed to make Dakini a sustainable project with sales in the 2,000 - 3,000 range. We're down to 1,000 now, which is not enough to keep the wheels spinning. Think about those numbers the next time you think that a copy or two for friends will not make any difference to the label. As of now, we are seriously considering winding down the label after one more release unless we see some sort of increase in support with the new Drumspyder and the forthcoming Makyo releases. We'll also see if offering legal download options helps any. But if you like what we've done, and want to see more of it in the future, the time to step up and show some support is now. Rant mode off.

-------------------------------

Anyway, hope you all have a great summer, and if anyone's coming to Boom, hope to meet you there.

--Gio--

Hmm, that's a worry. If they are going to go to digital, I would hope that they would consider FLAC/WAV as well as mp3. No good just going mp3.

There are 3 releases I want to buy when I have the spare funds...

oh dear
welcome to the future

"I think records were just a little bubble through time and those who made a living from them for a while were lucky. There is no reason why anyone should have made so much money from selling records except that everything was right for this period of time. I always knew it would run out sooner or later. It couldn't last, and now it's running out. I don't particularly care that it is and like the way things are going. The record age was just a blip. It was a bit like if you had a source of whale blubber in the 1840s and it could be used as fuel. Before gas came along, if you traded in whale blubber, you were the richest man on Earth. Then gas came along and you'd be stuck with your whale blubber. Sorry mate – history's moving along. Recorded music equals whale blubber. Eventually, something else will replace it."

Hmm, last week I happily discovered that Dakini's recent catalog was available at JunoDownload.

However this week there is no trace of it at all, as if it was never there. weird.

I still have it in the history of my browser, so I know I am not imagining it. Unless my browser is also imagining it ?!?

really would like to hear some new Makyo on CD, and I would pay a good amount for a Makyo live DVD with some of those belly-dancers

I actually had had plans to ask Gio if he would come play down under, but after a load of market research sadly found interest very lacking here in and out of the psy culture

I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy!
