Tomos, my audio interface has nothing to do with the second cheap monitor system. I feed it from the Benchmark using its RCA outputs, and that's its biggest advantage against the DA10.
You just need to connect your main monitors to another power distributor with a switch, place it close to you and switch on or off the main speakers when you want to A/B your mixes.

Ah,
So if I understand correctly the Benchmark outputs on both balanced and unbalanced at all times and you just turn off one set of speakers to hear the other.
Low-tech, I love it.
I wonder if they make a power switch as good looking as the silver DAC. |

That's it exactly. And besides the low-tech aspect of it which i really love too, it saves us around 2.500 euros. That's what we would have to pay for getting the Crane Song Avocet monitor controller which seems to be the most transparent of all.
By the way, do you use the K-System? I do and it saved me.

I'm very interested in setting up Bob's approach to monitoring, I've heard great things about it.
Do you have some more information on it? I will definitely give it a go at implementing it and seeing what difference it makes.
Cheers

I have a lot info on it, but we'd hijack the thread.
I assume you already searched about it, so if you have any questions PM me or start a new thread as more people maybe interested on it.

so, I'm pretty much settled for the dac-1 now.
just one question is still in my mind...because I think my motu ultralite has just RCA s/pdif outputs.
would that connection be possible with an rca to coaxial adapter? I think with toslink it wouldnt work, correct me if I'm wrong...
would this bring any differences in quality, connection stability etc?
thanx for your input guys!
ps: regarding the k-system, this should give you a first hint http://www.digido.com/bob-katz/level-practices-part-2-includes-the-k-system-2.html

I was almost sure the benchmark has rca spdif input.
Guess I was wrong

it has rca outputs, but just coaxial and optical s/pdif inputs...aes/ebu is not an option for me

because the motu is my audio interface and the dac-1 is just the dac for my monitors

hmm, I'm sorry, but it's doesn't makes any sense, why on earth u want to use double dac on your signal path? Motu is very high jitter converters to compare to dac and if u do use them together, than I'm afraid u'd make it even worth! Sell your motu and get dac-1 usb and sun will shine 24/7 in your studio

ahmm, the dac-1 is just a dac, no interface...and the jitter of the motu doesnt matter at all because the signal is just transmitted digitally through the motu, no convertion at all happening, so there cant be any sample jitters

ok I think I found the answer myself
the dac-1 has a rca to coaxial adapter coming with it...
would it be better to go for an optical converter directly after the motu?

are u 100% sure that motu s/pdif out free of jitter? sorry for confusing, but most audio-interfaces do affect signal path, i could be wrong about motu (but well i don't have the manual with detailed signal path map, so i can only guess).
