Helly, my name is bobby.

and I suffer from displaced goatrancer syndrome.

Everyday, I wake up and I get blasted into space by music from 10 years ago.

not "goa" gil....not "goa"trance volume 73...

Can anyone help me? I heard the only cure to displaced goa trance syndrome is an oldschool party, but in the 3 years I've been around I still have not encountered anything like this in north america.

I hear there is a mecca for people like me in the forests of belgium and the hills of israel, but at the same time, I know that everything I need is right here.

So what do you say, north america, is there anything we can do to help me and others like me?

I believe that you sir ARE that Mecca.

Think of it as an honor. Even though you're playing an oldschool style; you're a pioneer in the local scene by bringing back the old style with new flavor.

It might feel lonely, but remember that you are surrounded by all your "brothers and sisters" of the psy community.

Sometimes I feel this way about what I play around here. But it's still a better story for Full-On around here than it is for Goa.

Surprisingly, I've seen some people from the rave scene and some underground psy parties (not the typical slew of Dj's around here at Psytribe/GreenSector/Ananda) who play GOA style trance.

Dramatization of the longterm effects of Displaced Goatrancer Syndrome:

God help us and may goagil bless our souls...

I know there is a Dj E-motion (not to be confused with Dj E-rection) in the rave scene who plays goa at 155bpm, but its just not the same and I don't believe in $5 water bottles. What are these underground parties with people dropping shakta and infinity project tracks? I'd like to be the first to know, I've never gotten the chance to kick up dust to a propper goa set... I'm hoping our family here decides to throw down an oldschool party one day where we all just play our favorite music that got us into it all, and we can share where we're all comming from. That would be so cool Heck it might even start something, and some of the burnout police might put down their balloons and not feel so jaded..

At Airika Audio's last shindig in the desert, from the limited stuff I heard; I heard goa sounding proggy stuff in the 130's. It was mixed with some rather unexpected stuff though too.

Remember, in these "other" parties, the "rules of psytrance" don't always apply. I heard one of the local Psytrance DJ's who frequents the rave scene (Hipnotic Starr - Who mixes on VINYL oddly enough, which might be the reason for this odd selection) mixing some melodic Full-On, the stuff that I love but generally regarded as "cheese" by some people here; with some hardcore driving dark night tracks... side by side.

It was really different from what you would hear at a Psytrance party; and actually I'm not sure it really worked... But the point is, with that loss of "rules" I think that you have more "rave" DJ's who will dig back to the tracks from 5-10 years ago; without feeling the stress that their peers would misjudge the selection. And because a lot of these guys were listening to Goa when it was first starting out; it's no surprise that they like to let it drop into their sets now and then.

Unfortunately, I can't really tell you the name of the DJ's I've talked about, because I was never formally introduced to them. xD

Plus your definition of "Goa" might be a bit different than mine... who knows. I don't know Goa trance well enough to tell you if this was old or new music. It sure sounded like the Goa trance I've listened to though. I guess the other closest modern genre name I could give it is faster edgy tribal progressive. But it was definitely sporting goa basses.

I know that if more people make Goa TODAY, there is more chance that it will get played today. It's pretty hard to get booked playing 10 year old music in most places.

Well all in all, goa is a kind of vibe and a kind of energy, musically it is story-telling and travelling, done through expansive atmospheres and melodies.. sonically it is organic rather than sci-fi or techy, the reason I am into it is for its variety and for its soul, comparing any number of goa tracks within the genre or the 1994-2001 period and they are so very different from eachother in where they go, what they do, and how they deliver...when goa is done best it becomes what you could call psychedelic trance music (definition: hallucinogen albums) and thats why we still have it today and why we have so much fun, the spirit is still there, before anyone starts any debates, i'll say I'm with you on that.. but there is also so much jadedness with full-on, namely its predictability. I love full power no shower politics but my number one pet peeve is that 90% of the time the breaks just don't deliver, its that same winding up siren sound...you see the break comming a hundred miles away telling you exactly when the beat will come back in...and then its back to glitched out robot noises. Its just lazy. To illustrate my point: play a talamasca/electric universe/spacetribe track from today. Play one from 2003. Holy crap its the same and its like no one's been noticing because they got those bright sounds and wow that bass is fat. Now play their tracks from 98, 99. Holy crap!

I just like goa and the oldschool stuff, and for those of you who don't know me I'm not aproaching this from some jaded elitist attitude, I'm 20...i first heard Astral Projection when I was 13...i've been here for all the rest, and thats about it, other than that I'm told I have pretty good taste in music and every time I play whether its my tracks or a DJ set I get a mixture of older people with huge smiles on their face thanking me for jump-starting their memories, or young people with huge smiles on their face holy-shit-man-what-was-that-ing me... hence I don't want to be alone in playing this music and being some kind of delicacy

But the goa vs psy discussion has been had 1,000 times on isratrance already and I'd like to avoid any huge debates... lets each have our own opinions as we rightly should, I would however like to create a discussion on the possibility of a retro party, the older the music the better for the sake of the theme, so I'm hoping someone out there can align with this notion and I hope something can happen because I honestly have been waiting for 7 years and i'm starting to feel like a weirdo

As for people making goa today, theres about 30 new artists that showed up this year, artists like braincell and others doing psytrance are going back to melodies and abstract trance atmospheres, like 5 new goa labels showed up, and suntrip has been putting out album after album of quality new goa every month with no end in site... Kahn or anyone else - here is a good place to start if you want to hear some artists: http://www.psynews.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=50980&st=0&start=0

Finding this kind of music to play, new or old is no problem

We just need to have a party! All the cool kids in belgium are doing it...

[edit] Retro includes classic progressive, classic psy-tek (Son kite - Minilogue!) oldschool full-on, darkpsy before it was called darkpsy....even jungle... Lets do it! The DJ's around here should know what i'm talking about more than anyone else, so its them I hope to reach

Yeah, I've been listening to just about all the new music I see being released tagged as "Goa." It's been interesting to hear the results. I'm also a fan of some of the older stuff like Hallucinogen and whatnot. But if anything, I admit that I'm a much bigger fan of the new school sounds. I don't mind the genre mixing we're getting. I don't think I ever would have gotten as much into psy in the first place if Full-On hadn't come to the point that it has in the past couple years though personally. But then after discovery, I've been opened up to a whole spectrum of new music. And although my favorite stuff is still the hard melodic full-on, I've discovered lots of other music that I love too. So on that note I say, we should embrace evolution in music, because all it does is make new fans and opens up a whole new world to these people. Also, I think that music in a lot of genres not often tagged as "cheesy" is more predictable than some of the most predictable full-on. Different ears, different tastes I suppose.

On that note, I have really been enjoying the sets you've played at recent gatherings; and so to that I say, "I like goa trance."

Seen these guys at Earthdance in Wisconsin...Totally blew my mind in da morning...Book these two, we got Jeremy here in the Midwest and yall are LUCKY to have Bobby on the coast out there...Totally old school vibes with the production and quality that is reviving and repleneshing the roots of it all...

Old School vibe with excellent production standards of today.

Jeremy plays at our parties, and we have discovered that a ton of people have this inner passion for goa music...It has quickly become a midwest staple...Thank Damon and Scott for that one kinda...

It's truly unbelievable what a goa set can do for an experience....I have discovered it, as well as so many others.

Respect to you two and most certainly keep it goa'n!!!!!           Chillumafia

Freedom, the dj who along with Jeremy Solomoon (SP?), Jason Sterling, Shaggee. and Jake the Goaneck, and now Vaxination and I, began throwing parties in the Ozarks of Arkansas under the name of Esoteric Generation....Freedom, along with playing some of the most hair-pulling hard/dark sets both solo and with Shaggee, loves to bring out the 1200's and jam his old stuff....hmm...seems like the last time i saw it was LAST years Interfuse on Sunday morning

He's done it for as long as 8 hours, almost a full party.....he also played techy goa right after a Bodhi 13:20 set...psyliscious!

Freedom is in semi-dormancy as he is soon to be a father, but I'm sure he'd love to travel and rock that shit!

He's the shit

Anyone else?

Not sure if it helps at all but I am playing a 3 hour Sunday morning set of classic Goa trance at the upcoming Entheos festival in B.C. Plus there was the GO4 P4RTY festival in Oregon not too long ago (all old school from what I know). It's out there, you just have to go looking (or make it yourself, which you are doing!)
