What do I add to a demo cd which I send to a label?
Do they give back feedbacks or something even when the music is not to their taste or isn't at the desired level of musical releases?
Should I write any more stuff with the cd?

i never did realy , but usually labels find it nice to find:
[artist sheet]informations about booking-experiences, partys you have played. since when you produce or release, where, what your style is and what your are into. your adress, your phone, your msn
never unasked send any unfinished material (iŽll fix it later productions), cutted demosongs. this is only good if you have closed contact to the label, to make them horny for your new stuff in future.
it must allready sound like cd.
anyway its better to make a precontact to a label if you can. per mail, per msn whatever.
sending demos cold (without any precontact) ends often in no-answers, if the dont like your sound. if you have a connection to the A&R, he will tell you why he doenst likes your sound how to improve etc.
but this is a question of your philosphie. you want to send a cd, this is good. many people send many links. there are much labels which are tired from getting 10-30 links every day (they wont be listend very often).
some labels even if they dont like your sound 100%ly keep close contact to young artists, to make them improving until the date when the sound fits with their style. some other spend only contact to the superstars. this labels you should only consult if you allready got a big name.
if you are into graphic design make a nice cover with some pictures etc. too. this all makes your music not better, but its just smart and nice. |

hey there
try publishing freely a promo cd, do it through a mp3 crew or sumthing, they'll take care that your music is all around the globe.
at least worked for us
best luck with your project

a mp3 crew is a group of people focused mostly in releasing fresh music through this precious network, this people is usually hated by artists cauz they think they destroy the industry, but in fact they helped us a lot, they mastered our first Megalopsy promo and made it flow all over the world throught ftps and p2p's. =)
hope i cleared a little bit the concepts here,
and again, best luck with your projects dudes.
cheers

first i think that megalopsys tip is mabye a nice strategy but very risky on the other side.
if we talk about promoting strategies here we need to talk professional.
there are two promoting-targets:
1. business to business (artist to label)
2. business to customer (artist to crowd)
spreading songs through the www is only good for 2. a labelowner gets many cds (demos, friendly label-promos, some high quality unreleased sharing stuff between djs/a&r and all in wave anything else beyond wave is not worthing a listen in most cases) so no lablowner would ever look into his p2p to see if he finds something unreleased there because he has allready tons of cds. on the other site, if he wants to release your song and he finds out that ever internet-kid in the web allready downloaded it, he mabye never wants to make a deal with you again!
-----
your question. in my experiences i have sent some good tracks and bad tracks to different labels. try to find out if your sound realy fits woth the label-style! some labels answer, some not. dont waste your time with labels, which are not interested in answering on demos! for the future you know that you dont need to send them new stuff.
why: if a label answers on demos even if he doesnt likes, that means:
- he takes time to answer
- he takes time to listen to it realy to give an answer
- he is interested in connecting to young artists to find talents etc.
- he seems to be interested in communication
all this points are important. sometimes an answer needs 2 month. but an answer is an answer. after that, the label will tell you what to do in future: improve, remix it, whatever...
