Hi
Is there a way to cut (-90db) every sound when the sound gets lower than -25dB? In fact, I'm looking for a good way to remove noise in a voice sample in between words. i could do it manually but that would take forever. So when there is nothing said, there still is about -30dB noise that I'd like to remove without touching the other sounds or frequencies (which you do with normal noise reduction). I think I saw a friend do this once in logic but since I don't have logic, I'd prefer to see some vst/cubase/ableton/cooledit solution here.
thanks & cheers

There's a noise reduction plugin that comes with sound forge. I once managed to clear a recording for a friends radio show with it.
I'm pretty sure there's a vst for it too, gonna look it up.

As to your topic question,
you can use a noise gate as mentioned, or an expander (which at high ratio is a noise gate anyhow).

exactly... you set that minimu level @ the noise gate's threshold...

The best is a dedicated noise reduction plugin that will use a noise profile, like the one is sound forge or Waves x-noise.
Basically I think it works as a multiband gate that sets the thresholds according to the spectral balance of the noise print.
With the right settings the results will be far better than only using a gate if you have noise as severe as -30dB and the voice should not be affected too much.

if we talk about removing the noise from the usefull audio signal i personally got much better results with Voxengo's Redunoise then Waves X-Noise or Z-Noise. though im a big fan of Waves' plugins and they all have splendid interface and sound nice, Redunoise gets rid of the noise the same way, but it leaves the original signal more untouched.
if we talk about just getting the noise out, basically muting it, the best results you'll get if you cut everything with your bare hands. however if the file is too big, then one should use some gate plugin. be sure to check the attack, release and threshold setting not to cut usefull audiosignal (like the beginnings or ends of phrases moreover if the file has rich dynamic range).

Maybe cause it can be as painfull as cutting the audio from a big file!
All of tips must work. But I´d like to mention that I read the specifications of a plugin from Roger Nichols called Dynam-izer. It looks like a multiband compressor, but instead of frequencies it uses the peak level. I did not try it, as I´m bit confused about it... But when I saw the thread title I thought about it... Anyone tried this plug yet?

I'm with spindrift: Waves - x-noise.
analyze the noise - subtract it from the rest. GREAT!
Never used voxengos version, but as far as I know voxengo, it probably will be even better.

What you have asked for can be achieved very simply within ableton using the "gate".
You can control the attack, hold and release.
The db control you can change above "flip" is how much lower in volume you want the stuff to be that doesn't make it through the gate. So "-inf".
The slider is the level in db that the sound needs to be to make it through the gate. So if the hiss is -30db, then try about -25bd for this.

right, but if you have no possibility to analyze noise, for example if have usefull audio signal thru the whole file? then you start just tweaking until the result fits your needs. in this situation redunoise behaved better for me.
