I see that trick long time ago, but for me, this donīt make any sense...why cut ? to remove subnoise? rumble? fix it at the source...
imo these frequencies 25~80/100 Hz are the frequencies that shake the brain and the body...is the top bud!
some of these theories are legends for me...

yes, I edited my post in the meantime and added infos about how I cut, by the way. "UAD-Cambridge EQ" and then I choose elliptic 6.. don't know how steep exactly, but on the picture it looks VERY steep

I do it so that I don't waste speaker energy for something I don't need.

Maybe I do something wrong, but I cut all songs bellow 40-45 Hz VERY steep and personally I find the bass round and fat enough.
I have a dynaudio subwoofer, not a big one. What counts for me is that if I want a lot of definition and the ability to turn up the volume a bit and the sub shouldn't overload. When I don't cut bellow 45Hz the sub overloads very quickly but I do not really have much nicer bass feeling. I then started to cut the bass and I'm not feeling that I miss something. Except the terrible feelings I always had when I heard that my music is distorting most of all speakers much quicker at lower volumes than other music.
I once figured out with sinewaves which bassfrequencies make the woom I like.. and its above 40Hz for me.. I was very surprised because I always though it was deeper and because when I used an EQ the get the "push" I usually pushed around 50hz or lower. But what I then found out was that it all had to do with the shape of the eq-curve. I didn't push at 80hz because it added too much 100Hz and therefore I found it sounding too hard. I then at first thought it was the problem of "80Hz" not being low enough and pushed at 50Hz or lower and was happy about the result and thought "I like 50Hz and lower" in reality I only chose to push lower because in that case I got my desired 70Hz push without the over 100Hz push. the 50Hz and bellow were also pushed by the EQ but in reality they weren't actualy transmitted by my sub very strongly. So in my case I "thought" I like 30-50Hz but in reality I liked 50-80Hz. But the fact that an EQ push around 50-80Hz always pushes above 100Hz too made me thing it was not the right frequency. The push around 50Hz an bellow gave me the results I wanted but not because I actually wanted 30Hz-50Hz but because it pushed the 50-80hz but NOT the 100Hz and above. I only found that out when I started to cut VERY steep (UAD cambridge) around 45Hz and suddenly realized that It doesn't matter so much.
So I push at 50hz, but cut at 45Hz or 40 Hz.

hehe very nice dilema thanks for your time and input... the steepest eqs i got are the waves resonance series.. sonnox is okish

Yes...40Hz is not a complete information - the kind of slope should be considered.
I like to begin cutting around 30Hz with a 36db/octave slope. It's only a starting point though - never a rule.

right feel like we gettin sumwhere now.. i never really ever considered the type of slope,, still feel like my quest ion is left an anwsered

Whatever sounds cool
I cut at 30hz (because I don't wanna use "power" to produce frequences that people can't even hear) - otherwise I see HP senseless.
But these rules are stupid and I wasted too much time on using em. My advice just get gear which can produce good flat sound between 30-20000hz and use your ears, any "rule" or analyzer cant help you more. You can use any tool or do whatever it takes to make it sound as you want it

make sense...if you really donīt wanna these frequencies...but around this, we enter at another discussion...
these frequencies are not really heared by the human ears?
or..the frequencies are not felt by the human body?

neither
they aren't really transmitted from most of the equipment, rather bring it to its limits without bringing a lot of effects. And in case of most common route-keys of basslines they are not even there...
Assume you have a bassline on E1 41Hz (which is really deep) and you tune your kick to that bassline you mix shoudn't end up with anything bellow 40Hz in case everything is clean. Maybe there are situtation of higher basslines and the use of a lower harmonic of the bass which will involve something like 30Hz or so.. but for this you would need to use a subharmonic generator. Plenty of tracks in D with a fundamental of 36.7Hz.
I prefer not to second-guess the rig or hi-fi my music will be performed on. The roll-off slope on the hi-pass filters in sound system controllers is not vertical; low frequencies may get attenuated (also by the response of the speakers themselves) but they will be reproduced. If you engineer your tune properly you won't have anything under 100Hz that doesn't REALLY need to be there, and your low bassline/kick will still sound really deep even on systems that can't reproduce the full range.

What if the major part of my Kick is around 61hz. Do i have a problem?

okej lets get this sorted.. If your bass is too heavy, cut it in the mix, on the channel... same with kick.. They way you do it is up to you... there are good Eqīs and not so good ones... find someone you like... sometimes you need to cut much sometimes you dont...
saying a hertz wont make any sense, as they speak about different slopes, you can cut from 200hz with a wide and long slope, or you can cut from 30-40hz with a narrow deep slope... sorry if my knowledge about this is not the best..
but i dont get the point really... all other cuts are notches and dips here and there to get the character..
Hope it helps... i dont think there is a magic answer really

right nearlly there... Can I sqeeze more knowledge out of this?? I kinda understand what U getting at mate...so what I need to know to engineer it proply other than the basics that everybody knows, what r u gettin at colin, or am I entering money territory?

jizy as everyone said...its in the bassline it self...u got to make that killer patch that has just the right amount of low low end so u dont have to cut anything the kick should just squeeze in that rumble so to speak...hope you get it

I think what it comes down to, being really straight forward about it, is if it doesn't sound bad then leave it.
If you're not really that sure of yourself if it sound good or bad or whatever, just experiment.
When I first started cutting stuff I;d do what I thought had to be done, had a little break, listened to a few cd's, then have another listen. If it sounds thin then you cut too much.
Simples. |
