I've heard some pro sound engineers saying that if possible they do not use boost on eq and try always to cut...
I think it may be right way when you work with live recorded instruments or vocals, when your mission is not to damage the timbre.
But we here are working mostly with electronic sounds, so the "natural sound" is not what we are trying to achieve, thats why we should not be afraid of boosting=))
any opinions on that?

I think there is two reasons why it's recommended to use cut instead of boost.
With analogue equalizers using boost activates an amplifier, but while cutting you use passive filtering.
That means that the sound will be less coloured and natural. On a digital EQ you probably will not have that happening.
Also with boost it's easy to make very narrow sounds with problematic dynamics since a peak does a lot more messing about with the overall dynamic balance compared to a notch.
Boosting for an effect is not something to be afraid of, but you have to be a bit more careful when doing that instead of cutting.

YOU try to achieve you meen
i like natural sound. specialy for bass/drums/synth leads. and yeah , also synths have heir special timbre.
beside that you dont only damage the timbre , also on the general pitch with eq.
hard boosts will give you result of un-harmonic sounds , specialy if you make rich melodic music.
tend to not cut to much as well.. and remember , always have the synth 100% adjusted before get to the eq.
