I agree about culture being the operating system and the capacity to change that. However, the way he talks about psychedelics, if you know nothing about it, you'd think he says that it's enough to take one such drug once and your operating system is going to be changed forever. Unfortunately, it isn't so easy, at least as long as we live in the society with its present culture. Either repeated psychedelic experiences with conscious effort for integration would be needed to acheive that or other spiritual practices like yoga or meditation (different ways for different people). |

I agree with what you are saying.Psychedelics are like an amplifier showing you what`s already there. But you do not necessarily need it to find what`s already there. There is many different shovels to dig up the same treasure

Agree with wat terrance says... he is amazing...
Believe me for some ppl just one use is enuff... but for some, with more bugs, viruses, corruption n stupid conditioning in their head, it takes a longer time and many uses... and some never get it...
And come on, dont look at psychedelics as "drugs"... its different... kinda felt that hint in the previous post... 
I believe, everyone on earth, when they are mature enuff to think properly, and after being inspected by the shaman if they are ready, shud be given one good doze of a psychedelic in a proper setting under a shaman... like an initiation ceremony... 
and true that there are many shovels to dig the treasure, but yeah psychedelics is one very very powerfull shovel...

Sorry, i don't consider psychedelics as drugs, i just used it in the very broad sense, as if i said "external substances". Otherwise, i'm totally for the wise use of psychedelics and don't put them in the same basket with all drugs! And i'd love to meet one of these ppl you mention for whom one use was enough ;-) |

My opinion on this clip is that he tells us about the urgent need for humanity to change the way that it thinks.That we are trapped in copying cultural and time bound values instead of listening to the inner sense of right that is not influenced by place or time.
The way we think now is wrong,it makes us incompatible with nature and it is not working for a long time perspective. There are many things that needs to be changed but the main thing is that we have to stop the destruction of our planet and all the lifeforms that exist in this place and to be able to do so we have to change our operation system since the problems we are facing today is the fruit of the current way of thinking.
When we think it is often not ourself that think we let the cultural program think for us.That`s why everybody that lives on the same place thinks and often looks the same.At every place ,every country and every city there are many people who think and behaves the same way,why? it is because they all have the same cultural operation system.
We have to start to look outside the small subjective inprogramed cultural angle and think for ourself. We have to understand that many things that we think that we think is only inprogramed cultural values.
I view the end of the clip as the most important part

can Mckenna talk about anything else besides taking psychedelics as the way out ?
He has lots of good theories about this culture, but is there a way to get to it without consuming psychedelics ? hmm i am interested !

Terence is a fantastic fellow psycho traveller, i respect his beloved words and i embrace his knowledge, it does not matter for me if you use psychedelic plants to get to a state were you can experience the universe, it does not matter if you use anything as long as it helps you to get on your feet and do something to make this world better.
It's all inside of us and by using intelligent tools given to us by our ancestors like Meditation, plants or any other technique we can achieve what we really really want - a beautiful connected world were we can be free to express ourselves as who we really are.

Mckenna was a double Scorpio that means both his mind and his heart were married to the most extreme form of power and energy possible. Thats just who he was... For him psychedelics were the one and only way - apparently. But of course they are not. Not necessary at all. But for him extremes are the only way. Psychedelics can be good... but they can also be bad. If your trying to break from your culture and you take psychedelics and find your not ready... you will be even more a robot than ever before.
In fact his methodology of psychedelics or nothing is actually pretty limiting and monotonous.
Great guy to listen to though. Very intelligent and powerful.
