I swear the next computer I buy will be a Mac. Logic is just so much more effecient and less problem-prone.
Ok here is a new one. Been doing projects for a while now, everything is fine. All my VST instruments are working, audio is recording great, sequencing to hardware is working. I generally start new projects straight from the blank def song. Because of this as I change the interface around and find better ways to organize tracks I'll go edit the def song to be the way I like it so next time I start something new it is already set up.
Yesterday I reorganized all my MIDI tracks into folders based on their outputs. I have a MS2000R folder with 2 tracks for multitimbral use, MicroQ folder with 16 tracks for multitimbral use, etc etc. I finally got around to setting up an instrument database so I can just select the MicroQ folder and then Inst 1 and the track then sets up the correct midi interface out and channel to make multitimbral use less of a hassle. Did the same thing for my Lexicon MPX110, MS2000R and SH-101. Then I set up patch name scripts for the Lexicon and Korg. I close up Cubase for the night and look forward to starting a new project the next day.
I wake up and start up Cubase, def song is all ready. I have Battery pre-loaded into the default song with its own track and all the outputs ready. This just makes it faster from starting to getting a beat down. I go about like normal, load some samples into Battery and get ready to sequence a beat. Now for some reason, no sound is being made. The MIDI is working, the MIDI track mixer shows activity and the samples are getting activated in Battery, but it refused to output any signal. Same goes for all my VSTs. They will react to MIDI track sequencing but won't output anything. Audio is functioning, because I can import or record audio and it will work normally. Goes into the mixer like normal, gets routed to the master mixer like normal and then to the master out of my soundcard. VSTs will not though. None of the Battery channels (3 stereo, 14 mono) in the Mixer, even though the samples are being triggered, have any signals.
This problem doesn't really make sense to me, the VSTs are recieving MIDI, just not outputting any signal. Anyone know what could be up? I fully expect it to be something simple but for the life of me I can't fix this infernal program.
Edit: Also, all the songs I created before making any changes have the same problem now. Plain audio files work fine and MIDI being sent to hardware synths through the MIDI interfaces work, but VST softsynth/samplers fail to output a signal. Must have been some global Cubase preference I changed unknowingly but I sure as hell don't know what. I can't find any obvious MIDI or Audio preference changes. |

I'd like to say I've got an answer for you dude, but I don't.
I've had some similar problems, certain vsti's refuse to play midi data, but the on board keyboard of the vsti still outputs audio when pressed. Sometimes the vst output will just pop click and fart and my output meters read +56dB!!
Most of the time, the plug in will start working again if you remove it from the song (save the instrument .fxb first!), save the song under a different name with the missing vsti slot, quit cubase, reload the song file you just saved then reload the vsti instrument.
Sometimes this has worked for me, other times a system restart has been needed. On rare occasions, cubase just flat refuses to play ball. I'm told that SX is supposed to be more stable due to it being Nuendo with some extra midi features bolted on, but I'm not convinced. I'm old enough to remember cubase 1 on the Atari, and that crashed and locked up too!!
So no solutions, but you're not alone in your fustration. Good Luck |

I might have an answer!
Check in your Audio System dialog. If you have 'Enable Audio Only During Play" SELECTED then de-select it, re-save your song, quit VST, then restart VST and reload your song. Hopefully, your VST instruments will be back.
If you quit VST after saving your song while 'Enable Audio Only During Play' is selected, the next time you load your song in VST instruments will make no sound.
Took me fucking AGES to work that out... hope it works for you. Please let me know if this is the problem!
Cheers and good luck,
Colin |

Colin you are a lifesaver.
Enable Audio Only During Play wasn't selected, so I selected it, saved and quit. Started back up and deselected it, saved and quit. Rebooted (just for good measure) and started it and bam, it works. Very strange and potent little kink, wouldn't you say?
Thanks buddy. |
