I got the newest version of cubase. the newest version is: Cubase 5 VST (R6):)
If you use your computer only, try to work on the cubase with a virtual synth...:)
My personal opinion on virtual synth is that they are good but very basic!!! After a while you will be have to dump the virtual and work with the real thing!!!
Cubase is basicly good for recording audio/MIDI from your synth to the computer |

It's like a real synth (Roland, Yamaha, Access, Clavia, that stuff) but it works on a computer. Most of the time it's VST, but some of them are DirectX too. |

A virtual synth (SoftSynth called), is a small program that replicates a real synthesizer. There are many of them. Some VSTi and some DirectXi and some, just stand alone softsynths. You need a powerfull PC to run those well enough with Cubase. I think if you have 1ghz CPU, u don't really need to buy a rael synth - but you do need some MIDI control keyboard - it's very very useful. I prefer a whole synth with a keyboard - it's better that way.

try this link www.kvr-vst.com look for the instruments. but it would be really good if you had midi controllers : keyboard and knobs/sliders box [like phatboy or doepfer,or some combined controller: keys + knobs+ sliders ]
and don't forget to put as much RAM as you can
