Cubase SX3 -audio and VST instruments not playing, only MIDI. Help!

So...no sound when I play my project, because all that plays is the MIDI itself, but it doesn't get routed to the vst instruments. And the audio doesn't play. I'm not getting any messages about missing audio, etc. on startup.
And I can close the track, but when I try to quit the program, it crashes.
Tried uninstall/reinstall once, worked on a new project without problems for ten days, then the same thing happened.
Help! |

Thanks for the suggestion...turns out uninstalling/reinstalling the sound card drivers did the trick.
