I am running Cubase sx2 2.2.0.39 in Win XP.
Sempron 2800 (2 ghz), 1 gb ram.
Suddenly my Cubase started acting weird. My old projects that were made on the same setup and used to run fine do not play in Cubase anymore. The CPU meter bar jumps to ~70% mark and with more complex projects all the way up so the red light turns on. In such a state I can not close Cubase or shut down Windows, it just freezes.
I tried to see what causes it, but could not find any logical reason. I made a test project with 4 Ohmboyz and 2 Albinos and at some point the meter bar moved to around 80% and started twitching.
Could you knowledgable guys tell me how to fix it? I can't finish my precious projects!
Thanks.

Well, there could be num. of resons for that
1>u should work only in audio, not many instruments opend (1-2-3 max)
2>Use a lot of groups, like for low cut EQ and save Cpu on plugins!
3>obviously, swich to better comp. (2ghz is very old)
4>clean ur hard drive from all shit, ads, and viruses

Try moving the contents of your vstplugins folder to a temporary folder.
Move them back one by one.
Sometimes the culprit can be found there.
Otherwise there is always the standard support answer: "Have you tried reinstalling your operating system ?"

defragment your harddrives. check for adware/spyware and run a complete virus scan. start-run-msconfig should allow you to disable programs that use otherwise your ram.

I´ve got the same problem... cpu usage to high. but it was the DiscoDSP bundle the real problem, the EQ30...
I just removed the vst from the project with the sound board turned off, add again and start to work fine

the same thing happened to me... Exactly the same !!! ..
finally i figured out that svchost.exe in my windows directory was infected with a trojan horse , which was causing the spike ... u can read an article on the microsoft knowledge base website ...
finally i had to reformat the drive and now cubase works fine , but this time no internet connection on cubase system and no problems whatsoever !!

2 things which I can think of, if it's still the same setup.
1. Spyware:

2. Somehow the VST Buffer size changed. A lot buffer size for low latency causes just that if your pc is not strong enough.

Mistake - ghz is no longer how to rate performance of cpus. A 1.66ghz core duo will probably be better than a P4 3.0ghz, my own AMD X2 which runs at 2000mhz (currently oced to 2.3) is much better than a lot of the cpus other there. It's about the architecture, not clock speeds. Which is probably why Intel sells more - they have higher clock speeds.

your cpu is ok. i say wait until conroe and am2 is released and then see what to buy. just another month or so...
besides, you can always get a 3800+ and overclock it.
