I`ve a new pc with following system requirements:
processor - AMD Athlon 64 3000 (2,01 GHZ)
512 MB Ram
SOundcard- Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
If I work now with cubase, with about 10 vsti`s and midi channels, its too much for the system the cpu is too weak. Especially Refx Vanguard needs very much cpu, even if i mute the other channels it needs about 70%!!
Is it real possible that this is too much for 2 Ghz or could there be another solution?I also tried to change the sound driver but theres no diffrence. Please help me I´m realy going crazy. Thanx |

It's possible that it's too much for 2.0 Ghz. Try making audio-mixdowns of your VSTi sounds to free up your cpu.
Also, wheck whether you are using the asio-drivers for your soundcard. If you are, try increasing the buffersize of the asio driver. |

I have not installed the Refx Vanguard, so I can't tell you if it is as CPU hungry as you mention.
However, try to set bigger latency times (>10ms) in the settings of the Cubase because very low latency increases the consumption of CPU power, especially with the SBlasters. Also, you can check the address below, for a dedicated ASIO driver for EMU chips based cards, like Sblasters are.

dude, you need a pro-soundcard, try the delta 44 for example, cheap on stable. your system is very good (you could have more RAM but 512 ok and thats not the reason).

It also can be your motherboard man. I hv a Pentium 2.4ghz
1gb RAM
Soundblaster soundcar and shity motherboard.
Well i hv this problem too, but my case is worse than yours, cause i cant even use 3 vsts together and the sound start clicking and jumping out..If i use more it wil get worse until my cubase stop working. And even if i make some vsts disable my cubase is always slow, if u know what i mean..If i dont disable vsts, i cant even edit stuff (and thats when the song is in stop mode)! After one minute of track and some vsts every fucking thing goes slowly there This is pissing me off, sometimes i feel wanting to punch the pc heheh Im using asio driver kx and the latency is 170ms, there is just one level above (340 i guess) but when i choose this one cubase get fucked up.. After doing a search i decide to buy soundcar EMU 1212m and some asus or gigabyte motherboard like gigabyte GA-7VT600-l. I hope with those changes i get free of those fuck%&¨$#@ latency/cpu problems, its too much frustrating working with cpu problems like this.. I also use flstudio and this problem also happend there, but less then in cubase!
Thanks , keep cool |

the problem friend is...
1)the sound card. you need one more powerfull.
2)the Ram at least 1giga
3)the motherboard

it's the ram... you mother board should be ok, the soundblaster is a shitty card which doesn't take load from your cpu, but it's perfectly adequate for home studio use... Upgrade your ram to 1G or more and you'll have doubled your audio performance... Cuz that surely is the bottleneck in your system After you have upgraded your ram, you'll have to upgrade your soundcard to get better results... But 512Mb ram on an athlon 64 2Ghz is much too little... your processor spends most of it's time waiting for shit from the ram... And the ram has to swap with the hard-disk wich slows u down even further... In fact, your system operates about as fast as my old athlon t-bird 1200Mhz, because of that bottleneck
most computer stores give very bad information about the real performance of a computer... It's not only the speed of the cpu that matters... |

well let's start,
on my point of view it's look's like you use'd the reverb plug that comes with the cubase too much.
i recommend you to use other reverb vst.
the computer is blast one and i work with somthing similar:
AMD Athlone 3000 64 bit
Gigabyte k8 triton Nforce3 chipset.
1024 ddr 400 geil
120 gb hard disc raid!!!!!!!!!!!
Delta 1010 sound card
so the only reason i see it's the overuse of the reverb plug of the cubase!!!
or it's can be a vsti that kill your cpu (but i dont think so because i use 28 vsti on my last track and the cpu is on 75% stable)
and boobytrip:
the Amd it's not the same 'mhz as the intel ones,
as like as the Mac 'mhz is not the same as the intel.
they are use on different technology's.
the amd 3000 64bit = intel p4 3200!!!! (and it's a fact) soon i will get the computer's compare site and it's will be more obviously.
the strongest Mac computer (correct me if i wrong) is the G5 2500mhz (2500 mhz) but the mac technology is different and it's the strongest machine for music and graphics stuffs.

512 MB Ram?!! Soundblaser?!
You could have the fastest CPU but with the minimum spec RAM there will always be a bottle neck.
As recommended b4: 1GB RAM if you mainly work with VST's.
A mobo with a fast FSB.
A dedicated ASIO compliant audio card (M-Audio, RME, Motu)
For recording set the buffersize low to reduce latency.
For post production turn the buffersize up to reduce CPU usage.

Yes you`re alright, it``s the ram. I got an application now which is called z-defrag. You can defrag your ram with it and look how much ram is used. The result. 80-90%.
I´m going to buy more ram now, and hope that is okay than. Thank you very much for your tips |
