This used to solve a similar problem with Cubase VST:
Go into the Audio Setup menu and see if the 'Release ASIO Driver In Background' is ticked. If it's ticked, un-tick it, press OK and save your project. Now re-load the project and see if it works.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

ASIO4ALL crashes on me quite often, depending on CPU load, RAM load etc..

but I'm still much better off using that than having to deal with the latency of my onboard AC97.

Seems like a lot of people are complaining about problems with SX3 - maybe Steinberg is really only focusing on making their flagship product (Nuendo) as stable as possible and forgetting Cubase in the process.

DJSarasin - please don't post incorrect advice. ASIO drivers give by far the best performance in applications like Cubase SX (although as with any sound drivers this depends on how well they were written).

ASIO4ALL may not work well for you but it works fine for many others, and it will work even better if you don't expect to be able to get 1.5ms latency out of your laptop's onboard soundcard. You should only use it if proper ASIO drivers (written specifically for your soundcard) are not available; in most cases this means AC97-compatible soundcards built into the motherboard (as in Illusions case).           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I did say In My Honest Opinion.

I have found it NOT to work for me.

I use a Tascam US122, with my laptop and have only ever had trouble with it.
so i gave up on it.
Just plain Sound Device and 3GB CPU and 1GB RAM.

No problems.

You used a dedicated ASIO driver (not ASIO4ALL) for your Tascam US122 and it didn't work?

Make sure you're using the latest version - they can be found here:
http://www.tascam.com/Products/US122_downloads.html

There should be no reason for you to use ASIO4ALL at all. If the ASIO drivers from Tascam don't work then there is something else wrong with your computer.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

using m-audio delta asio drivers

'Release ASIO Driver In Background' is unticked.

I'll stick to 2.2 for now.

Could this be because I have both 2.2 and 3 installed?

Do you mean ASIO (which is an audio driver standard created by Steinberg), or ASIO4ALL (which is a generic ASIO driver for sound devices which don't have dedicated ASIO drivers)? There is a huge difference between them and for a 'decent sound device' you should most definitely be using an ASIO driver (although probably not ASIO4ALL!)

Yeah...thats what i mean!

Onboard Card = Asio4All (this is what its for?)

Good Sound Device = Asio

I will check it out Colin. So far i have been doing fine without it.

Does it handle better when you start really Working your machine?
