I'm considering to buy Cubase Studio 5. One thing worries me though. When I checked the feature comparisions between C5 and CS5 at http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/musicproduction/cubasestudio5_product0/cubasestudio5_featuredetails1000.html , I noticed that CS5 has a "no" on "external FX" and "external instruments". What does that mean? I have a Nord Lead 2 and of course I want my NL2 to work together with CS5. Also I'll probably buy a hardware compressor in the future and I want it to work with my DAW.

Did I misunderstand something here? I don't believe Steinberg disabled the ability to connect hardware FX and instruments in CS5, or did they? What does the "no external FX" and "no external instruments" mean?

Thanks guys! =D

Hi.
I'm a Cubase 5 owner (not studio) but personally, I don't use external synth or FX option.

I just add a new midi track and a new audio track.
I route the midi signal to my external synths and the input of the audio track to the right output of my sound card.

Same for external FX : only add an audio track. and send your audio signal directely to compressor and hit record to record the wet signal.

Maybe it's not optimal but with this trick you can still use external devices in Cubase Studio.

lanticho: in what way did the Studio version limit you while producing?

dmtoad: yeah, that's how I always did in SX3. Thanks! =)

You can integrade external fx in a better way than just send one audio track by its whole output to fx in..f.e. you can create an fx channel then route it back and use it as send fx..i guess that is ment..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

Although I don't consider myself as an experienced Cubase user, I initialy chose the Studio version thinking that the full version offers too many options for my level of music production, not to mention that I would save some money for a good vst etc. In the meantime, as I started working with cubase, I found out that the reduced number of plugins (in the studio version) would make me invest in a new vst, eg the envelope shaper plugin (which I consider important) is not there, so I'll have to get one vst now. I have many examples like the above that I found out (not only plugins), working along with studio version, but it all comes down to what you consider most important. My best advice would be to examine the comparison chart of both versions in GREAT detail and then decide. Take care!           www.myspace.com/antlabros

have no understanding, why they even created this crippled studio version ...
i mean, if there are any features the user won't need ... he/she most likely won't use them
they could have solved this a bit more sophisticated with ONE version of cubase,
but a fully customizable GUI (to hide away crap you won't need or use).          http://www.myspace.com/realtimeproject
