Cubase Studio 4: GUI Slowdown on growing projects

hi everybody

who of you is using cubase studio 4 (or cubase 4) and can confirm this issue? (or confirm the contrary)

when the project size grows, the gui becomes more and more unresponsive/sluggish. i.e. resizing audio events, changing audio event fades, changing midi note length etc. becomes sluggish, while for example moving a midi note stays fast. this also happens at low CPU loads, and for quite normal project sizes (not any insane-large-"testproject"-sizes). the sluggishness goes so far that working with the project becomes annoying.

thanks for any comments guys!

more RAM
more CPU
faster HD

for today its 1333 bus speed mother board ,2ghz DDR III , Quadcore processor etc.

is it still running slow?

and offcourse , if using the 2003 methods of working and save cpu (like bounce audio freeze etc) when it was all just P3 computers then to say there isnt enough power today is crazy

but the plugins are heavier to sound better this days so still recomend to progress wit technology

thanks for the answer, but it was not very useful (sorry to say). do you have cubase (studio) 4?

it seems that i have to clarify my post:

this behavior also happens if:

* no vsti used
* no insert fx used
* no fx channels used
* ==> cpu load at 1% (!)

this behavior can be reproduced at very low cpu loads, even with e.g. 50 midi channels with alot of midi parts containing some notes in it. nothing else, just alot of events in the project. not even playing.

anybody else, with cubase (studio) 4 running and who could verify this?

thanks in advance, cheers!

bump

nobody using cubase (studio) 4?

i would really appreciate it if anybody who uses cubase (studio) 4 could open a finished (LARGE) project and check if:

* moving audio event fade handles is "laggy"/sluggish
* resizing midi notes is sluggish
* drawing automation or midi cc is sluggish

cheers and thanks guys,

Hey,

I'm using Cubase 4.1.3 (the full version) & never faced any problems like these. I'm on Windows XP SP3 & using a Quad Core processor with 2GB of ram.

Have you tried asking this question on the the Cubase.net forum? The guys over there are usually quite good at solving problems.

Do you have the latest updates? If it started all of a sudden then maybe a quick reinstall of Cubase might help.

hey Get-a-fix!

thanks for your answer! this tells me that maybe the problem is somewhere in my setup, although i don't yet have an idea where. i'm on cubase studio 4.1.3 and on a dual core, 2gb ram. i mailed with the steinberg technical support today but they couldn't help. maybe i try the forum next.

so, to get this clear for my understanding: you can work without any sluggishness/"laggy" GUI (event fade handles, midi note length resizing etc.), even with large finished projects? (something like 50 channels, 7-8 minutes of music)?

thanks for the answer mate!

dtd, about your graphic card/driver, what are you using?
NVidia ? ATI ? What model ?
Does your drivers are up to date?

Hypnotik,

i'm using an older geforce model. drivers are up to date. i quickly thought it could be a graphics card problem, but then, the whole thing only happens when there are alot of events in the project, not necessarily in the current visible view (as defined by the zoom setting).

did you have a similar problem, caused by a graphics card issue?

Yup, i've had many projects with a lot of vst/vsti plugins, audio channels etc etc without any of the problems you describe.

I would definitely try the forum to see if someone else is having the same problems. If not then it is probably something in your particular setup.

It could possibly be your processor or the setting in Windows Xp. Have you removed unnecessary services & set the processor scheduling to background services?

Also try right clicking cubase.exe in the task manager & set it's priority to high.           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

thanks Get-a-fix for the reply, this sounds good in the sense that it might be a setup problem which can be fixed. if it were a cubase problem, we would probably wait two major versions for it to be fixed =)

i'll do some more tests and if i'm unlucky, i'll post to the cubase forum. the steinberg technical support wasn't helpful

I'm using Cubase 4.1.3 and I haven't ever experienced these issues before. I'm running an AMD X2 64 +4200
w/ 1gig of Ram.
Motherboard is an Asus Sli Premium
and audio interface is M-Audio Firewire 410

I also have had up to 80+ tracks of audio and vst's running at around 90% load and everything GUI wise still runs smooth (until I max out the cpu of course)
