I'm a fairly heavy Reason user and I like to create sequences in the Matrix and then bounce the data to a MIDI track for further editing. One of the nice things you can do is route the CV curve signal to a mixer channel's CV level in to gate or 'chop' just about anything. But this is of no help when the source material is a VSTi outside of reason.
What do you all use? Is it mostly manual chopping for audio parts? What about those random 32nd or 64th stuttered Talamasca-like leads? I know there's Cubase's chopper but I'm looking for something more like the matrix where individual steps can be gated on or off.
Thanks for your time.

matrix is awesome.Very user friendly fast workflow.I really miss such tool as a plug in for cubase.I write my notes in the piano roll but the possibilities with routing are really amazing with matrix and reason.
Rewire is your only friend here I guess

in C5 there's a midi plug-in called Step Designer. i haven't messed around with it, but it looks very much like the matrix and can probably do what you want.
there's also nothing wrong or awkward about manual chops. on the contrary, it should open up more possibilities, since you can process each slice differently if you want. and the slicing itself is easy too (either you slice into equal parts or have cubase detect the slices and just set sensitivity).
if all else fails, you can just stick with rewired reason and use it for what it does best.

Thanks guys. This helps, however I suppose what I'm most interested in is creating short stutters on VSTi leads. I guess most VST's have the arpeggiator function for this, but what if you have say a triad chord that you don't want to play as an arpeggio but you do want to stutter a bit?
Would you bounce the MIDI to an audio track and then create manual slices, or would you run the MIDI through a plug-in. If so, what plug in please?
Of course you hear this a lot in all genres of electronic music - I want to get familiar with the techniques then experiment on my own from there.
I think Albino's trance gate is closest to what I'm thinking of. I like it a lot because you can set the strength of it, whereas in Reason the CV typically gives you more of 'on or off' type of effect (although I found ways around that).

Predator has also a nice arp-you have plenty great arpregiators in many vsti synths but you can do unlimited great others things with matrix routings of reasons matrix. That was the thing to use it to anything else but not that standard notation. For instance cv for osc or pan in subtractor and things like that.I used a few matrix for one synth.
I think C5 is close to this but I havent used it so far. https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden |
