Hi everyone, new guy here. I've been using Reason 2.5 and an Mbox in my production endeavours. Alas, ProTools is great for the rock music and making Reason sound better but I can't stand needing the Mbox to run PT and the midi support sucks too. So, over the past few years I and a friend have been getting more into composing psytrance and we are split between Cubase and Ableton. I know both have VST support, rewire, and other various ways of tweaking sounds but I haven't seen either program in action. Can anyone convince me one program is better than the other? What are the most important differences between the two? |

Live has things organized so you can work fast, and it's really stable. Also, you can map controllers very easily and working with audio busses is easy and logical. And live is optimized for LIVE performances, you can arrange the tracks you made on the fly, while live adjusts everything to the tempo it's playing at.
Cubase has more midi-editing options, and it has delay-compensation accross the entire signal path (which is really nice). I find that if you work with it longer, you keep finding out that cubase has solutions built in for almost any problem you can encounter. I use it, and i'm really satisfied with this sequencer.
You can also take a look at Sonar 4, which is also a very good sequencer.
And if you have a mac, or want to buy one i would definately check Logic. |

i'm with boobytrip... I want to add that I wouldn't be able to choose because both programs are too different... At home cubase is better, on stage ableton is better. If u have mac, logic is better then cubase, but ableton is still the king when u want to play live. Ableton is also easier to learn then cubase, which is a big advantage. You can perfectly have both and have a use for both, they are quite complimentary... Now, logic/cubase/sonar/protools/that-motu-thing are quite alike, u only need one of those, but ableton is still usefull if u already have one of those sequencers... |

Wow, thanks for the responses! Looks like for now I'll be going with Cubase and later I'll add Ableton. |

Ableton Live 4.0.4 is the version which i use myself. I like Ableton cause of it's simplicity of use, good parameters, anyways... It has everything what i need, only one thing is maybe that midi works much better on Cubase;) but for now it's ok for me=)
Also if You wanna use Ableton, You must have min. 300Mb of RAM (512 is great).
Cubase is powerfull soft, but Nuendo from the same company is better than Cubase. It's faster... engine is better...
