Hey folks..

Does any of you guys produce with cubase on Mac os? Would i hv good stability to produce with a g4 powercore 1,33hz - 1gb Ram ? I hv this offer -> it will cost me like 1000 dolares, do u think it is a good idea? I hvnt got money to buy logic, so i will hv to stay in cubase. Does it worth buying this g4, considering i wont be able to use logic AND the fact i could save some more money and buy a mackbook dual core? Does it make a big difference (stability issues) producing with g4 powerboor, compared to a dual core one? Would the difference be big?
thanks!

$1000 for a G4????? That is crazy. Someone is trying to rip you off.

Those are VERY slow machines.

I wouldn't pay anything for a G4. You would have to pay me petrol money to bring it to the dump.

Man for 1000$ you can buy a way more powerfull pc, i don't see the reason to buy a mac since you'll be using cubase anyway.            Peace, Love, Death metal

Why buy mac hardware anyway?
It's more expensive, compared with PC, and now you can really compare it directly since its using same chips etc.

I have installed MacOS on my PC parallel to win XP, works great.

No reason to buy mac hardware at all. Just choose the quality PC hardware and all is fine.           Most of my music for you to download at:

Don't you have to have a 2nd hard drive to install Mac OS parallel with Windows ? I was going to try it out but I think I need another hard drive...           ~Airyck~

No you can partition one harddrive. but if you didn't do that before you installed windows it is quite a stunt to do it... its possible though.

It's not a sunday walk to install MacOS on a PC and it really depends on your motherboard how easy it is, and if you get all the components like lan etc. running.

In my case I got it all running.
There is a good forum and wiki for that stuff. I will post the links, as soon as I'm home if you want.

To say. it's illegal unless you are a developer.
If you have a motherboard with intel ICH7 or ICH8R chipset you download the JAS 10.4.8 with the ICHR patch already included. It's easier to use SATA controllers and drives than IDE.

It was not easy for me to do it, but I just wanted to know which OS is faster on my computer. So I invested about a day for it.

I set up a dual boot with acronis bootmanager, I have both OSsystems (for developing reasons of course) and they fully work with cubase FF800, Virus TI, M-audio Axiom, UAD-1 and Liquidmix.

I compared the performance of the two OS and WinXPs performance is a little bit BETTER!! after optimzing it. but OSx looks better..

A magazin compared OSx on a MacPro with bootcamp and WinXP on the same hardware, also there WinXP performed better than MacOs.

As from my point of view this is quite a disgrace for the so called music and "creation" OSx from Apple. Somewhere OSx or core audio seems to eat up ressources that WinXP doesn't.

I personally have no crashes with both OS, so my default choice for Music is WinXP, also because the choice of free plugins is bigger.

im sad to say yes its prety slow sometimes 1 have the 1.67ghz with 2 gigs of ram(max) its ok i get projects done and live sets are fine sometimes i have to deal with cpu overload though during live or gear my live set towards hardware so its not as much of a worry however in its defense never do I get random program shutdowns never does my computer crash and ive never had any stability issues my roomate got a 2700 dollar intel imac with logic 7 its the most unpredictable machine ive come across it does some mysterious stuff... if you go with mac wait on the intel ones till they become more stable. Id say 1000 is a little pricey considering you can check ebay for much better deals. but dont listen to the mac bashing i just think this particular one isnt the best for music.

cool thanx for the info subconciousmind I'll stick with my windows for now then...If I do a reinstall at some point (which I'm sure I will) I might try it out then....
in the mean time I'm good here with this. Of course I would be a "developer" at that point

which "particular one" isn't the best for music?
The "MAC PRO"? If this mac isn't the best for music, which one is?

here the quote from another forum:
Quote:

sound and recording magazine in germany (one of the top mags over here) tested cubase 4.01 to check out boot camp and how DAWs ran under windows compared to mac osx on the same computer. they turned up some interesting results, to say the least.

they used several different plug-ins to see how many voices or instances you could get on cubase 4 on xp and osx, and compared with logic and live.

NI Massive voices (cosy case preset)
cubase 4 on osx voices: 176
cubase 4 on xp voices: 180
live 6 on osx: 140
live 6 on xp: 174
logic 7 pro on osx: 140

Arturia Minimoog v voices (ce_softbrass preset)
cubase 4 on osx: 92
cubase 4 on xp: 100
live 6 on osx: 80
live 6 on xp: 96
logic pro 7 on osx: 80

Guitar Rig Instances
cubase 4 osx instances: 47
cubase 4 xp instances: 49
live 6 on osx: 41
live 6 on xp: 32
logic pro 7 instances: 49

their summary: "of the hosts we tested, cubase can run the most synth voices and vsti instances". test system was mac pro 2.6 (2x2.66 ghz dual core intel xeon) with 2gb ram and rme fireface 800/400. it's in issue 1/07, page 41 (in german, obviously).

I tried it on my "OSx on a PC" System, and other Forumusers tried it as well. All have the same result. Also on MacBookPro. WinXP performs better.
So which "particular one" did you mean?
