Hey guys, just wondering if my Cubase SX3 getting so laggy is normal or if this can be fixed.

Heres my specs.

Intel Core2duo 1.80 ghz with 4gb of ram (although only 3.25 gb is used cuz I sill use Windows XP) Ive got an Maudio MobilePre USB sound card and yes, my Cubase channel tracks are loaded with VST's. Each one probobly has about three or four on them. Now, this lag wouldnt surprise me if I were to be using like 20 channels, but im using like 10 with maybe 1 or 2 channels being Audio files not midi.

Any thoughts?

Loaded with VSTs? Depends which one. If you have PSP Nitro loaded onto every single channel, its going to lag no matter how fast your computer is.

What is your CPU use level at? Peaking?           http://soundcloud.com/aeon604

Nope, not Nitro, normal stuff like EQ's and some reverb stuff...

about my cpu level, its not peaking, about 60% and yet still lagging.

Also, when nothing is playing, the CPU use meter is already at about half...strange.

Also make sure you're using your Maudio ASIO driver and not some other driver.

If CPU isn't peaking something else must be wrong.
Some badly coded/optimized plugs can also cause lagging while CPU doesn't peak.

I might also add thet a 1.8ghz C2D is a good CPU but not the fastest out of the C2D range. If CPU is indeed peaking and your DAW is a desktop (not laptop) you could either invest in a faster CPU, overclock your 1.8 to a higher clock or simply bounce your tracks to free up processing power.

Hope this helps...

If the CPU is only @ 60% and you're having lags/problems, something is wrong.

How much other stuff do you do with your computer? At this point, I have a separate computer I use for internet/downloading type stuff. How many background processes is your computer using?

Often certain USB devices can cause regular, momentary spikes in CPU usage.

Open Cubase, load a track, and hit ctrl-alt-delete and watch the task manager. See if something other than Cubase is using a lot of CPU.

Then from here quit explorer from your processes in the task manager and use Alt tab to move between any windows you might have open! Works a treat if you are nearing completion of a song and need the little bit of xtra juice..

Thought I have an M-Audio Delta 24/96:
I have the same problem when using "M-Audio Delta Asio" setup from Cubase Sx3 (in Device setup).

I use this setup only when I'm starting a track and need no lag to record from my Virus, using Stylus RMX and some other CPU sucker hardware or software.
When I've finished recording and have all I need to get into the serious of the track, I'm switching to "Asio Multimedia Driver " (in Device setup).

Try also to increase your DMA Buffer size in your M-Audio sound card control panel (256 or 384 does it well)

Good Luck           Psybient/Downtempo psytrance album "Mystique" released!

Looks like u have 8 Vst instrument + 35 Vst fx.... Sounds too much for me.

Every tip here can work, and I would add some graphics issues. I had a laptop that could not handle the graphics so well, even with performance not so high. And the problem was lagging... Check the display driver!           LOADING...

Well i hv never used a original version of cubase, but from all experiences i had, with any version up to sx 3, i could never work with cubase without this lag. No matter how loaded my projects are. There is lag for open it, for close it, for load stuff.. I love cubase but hate this lag..can't understand why this doesnt happen to logic (5.5). I guess maybe is the cracked versions, they are not stable.
Anyway.. hope i can move to logic 8 soon and forget cubase forever! heheheheh kidding..           www.myspace.com/beehivelive

No, I bought Cubase and use the cracked version. In my experience it has been more stable.
