Press F11
Select an instrument
Create a new midi track, route it to the instrument, and start having fun.

Hi
Sometimes you find good infos on this german site:
http://www.timos-welt.de/cubase.htm
First step:
Do what mike A wrote..
You need to know what is the difference between "audio tracks" and "midi tracks" and what are "VST- instruments" and "VST - effects"
If you don't know ask me, if you know you are almost ready to go.
Good luck
